Lucas Oils

Anyone tried Lucas oils or addatives to help with vtc tick?

havnt tried for vtc click but did use for tranny and power steering. great success

Stay away from lucas anything. I've got a kz550 assembled engine thats completely fubarred from the drastic reduction in lubricative properties from some shmuck adding lucas to the oil of a motorcycle with a wet clutch

The only thing you did to your power steering system by adding lucas is shorten it's lifespan....

Nissan p/s systems use ONLY Dextron III transmission fluid..

Try to rebuild your VTC, I found out it was easier that it seemed.

I used X1R additive in my 240 for about 6 oil changes and it helped the valve stem seals from leaking as much. I need to get another bottle as it was spilled over the winter Its good stuff though.

I have always had good luck with Lucas products. At my buddies shop we have seen good results too. I had a '90 Accord with 186,000 miles. Transmission would not shift out of 2nd and if it did, it would slip. I took it for a flush and they advised me not to since it had such high mileage. I figured either way the transmission was shot. Flushed it and put 2 quarts of Lucas and I never had another problem with that transmission. Seen several other cases whwere Lucas worked well. I think all additives get a bad rap because people put them in and then don't change their oil or expect a miracle in a bottle.

Lucas gets a bad rep cause its proven to destroy engines, rear ends, transfer cases, and anything else that uses some kind of oil as a gear lubricant. By adding lucas to that transmission, you essentially thickened the fluid, which will make it work, but so would putting sawdust in it. The only difference is sawdust will show its destructive tendencies sooner. You might have gotten the same effect just by flushing the fluid and refilling with pure ATF.
Lucas and most, but not all, oil additives lack anti-foaming properties, and when added to other oils, this dilutes the anti-foam in the oil, allowing air bubbles to develop in the oil and removing its some of its lubricative properties. If you're looking at an AT that wont shift, and you know its because its shot, sure, give it a try, you might get a few thousand miles out of it, but its just a bandaid on a broken leg.

I put Lucas in the Sable I had and it kept the trans from banging into gear.
I sell plenty of Lucas products here at work with no complaints.

I dumped some in the old 75 Dodge I had. The engine seemed to be quieter and ran smoother, but it needed a new carb, so it never ran that great to begin with.

Since the truck cost only $400, I didn't care if it really damaged it any. I don't think it did, but my opinion is it might be a bandaid, but not really a solution.

Sorry but duh! An additive won't fix a problem if it is a high mileage failing componet! But Lucas seems to actually work to keep whatever was failing to work longer and better. Like I said, some people expect a miracle in a bottle. "I've got a rod knock and that stuff didn't do anything!" those are the funny stories. We carry BG MOA friction fighter at the shop I haven't tried it yet but have heard good things about it. We use a lot of BG products and almost everyone of them seem to be outstanding products. But again, an additive won't fix all mechanical break downs.

I will rebuild them but i would like to find a solution to keep them in good condition.


How about semi synthetic or full synthetic oils to rid vtc problems after rebuild?

I've added it to plenty sh!tmobiles in my time...My sister drives a Tercel that burns oil like a 2-stroke...Lucas seems to help it out significantly...

Try diesel oil.
smells a bit funny, but oil burning goes WAY down.

I read the link for why Lucas is bad. As far as being an additive for the crankcase I don't see it foaming like in his test. The oilpump is submerged into the oil so it's not churning like he is saying oil pumps will. I think some people put Lucas into an engine, transmission, or rearend as a last resort because the componet is on it's last leg. When the transmission or motor goes people seem to blame the additive when the componet was about to go anyways. But speaking of additives i heard that sometime back Slick 50 and ProLong were sued for not working and making false claims.

for diesel oils like shell rotella t...just dont use it in somthing thats not having issues with oil burning unless you're gonna run it REAL hard. I use shell in my bike through the summer..high comp/high temp/high abuse engines love it.

well i mean... why is it only a good idea to use it if the engine burns oil? i figured if something's bad for a good engine that it would be equally as bad for a not-so-good engine...

Well, somebody suggest me to put on a Lucas engine sealer because I have oil leaks, I know the problem won't fix as easy as this but at least I'll gain some time to save enough to swap a new engine, better than replace gaskets.

IMHO I think Lucas it's just a resourse to gain some time (you can call it a bandaid) in the meanwhile you can afford/have the time to do a major repair, I don't know much about this stuff, I'm no expert but I just try to use common sense about this.

Ok I got confused here! you're saying our cars should use Dextron III transmission fluid on the power steer lines instead of power steering fluid??

sorry if I sound too ignorant but maybe with my ignorance I'm killing my p/s by using the power steer fluid (i don't even remember the last brand I put on the max)

Yes,generic power steering fluids will ruin the seals in a nissan p/s system over time...

oh... um... crap. let me see what I'm using... so maybe this is why i'm leaking up top? i'm going to go read the bottle but I'm pretty sure i've got the wrong stuff

Diesel oil is a bit thicker (15w40 vs 5w30) and has additives added to reduce the oil burning that is more common in diesels.

About the P/S fluid, is it hard to drain the current fluid and replace with the one you are suggesting? can I do it without any special tools?
