I want to hear opinions here...What kind of gas is best to use on a 93 GXE Auto...87,89,93, etc...? Why do u think so?
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those threads that gets 300 people looking at it.

Thanks for the info,
Roman

I ONLY use super(93) or Ultra(94) (where available) for my car....and the only reason is because it's the most expensive.

Just Answered my own question...

Hour after I posted that question I went to CNN.com and found this article....read it...it's interesting: http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/10/18/home_auto/q_gas/

I still want to hear your opinions.

Does anyone know what the owners manual says to put in our cars. I need 92 or more when running NOS but probablt dont need it otherwise.

92GXE, touring wing, 18” racing wheels, Port&Polished intake, custom intake, custom yellow interior, racing seats, back seats taken out and replaced with subs and amps, NOS kit, Suspension tech. Lowering springs, custom grille, soon to be custom painted and have the whole engine rebuilt for big shot NOS and custom SC and tranny converted to 5-speed.

If you advance your timing any, you need to run at least 92+ octane.. otherwise, you can get away with 89 or 90. I wouldn't go below that though.

in the summer, my engine knocked with 89 octane even when running with "stock" timing. when cold outside, it was fine.

now if I run less than 92 octane, It knocks no matter what the weather.

gas

I worked at a gas station when I was in highschool and our bossman swore that using higher quality and higher octane gas was always the best path to take. He even used 93 octane in his stinking lawnmower. The better the quality, the further refined the gas is; meaning less crap in the mix. Higher quality gas (Exxon vs. Citgo) also contains higher amounts of detergents which will keep your injectors cleaner longer thus keeping your mpg high. As far as octane goes, if your car says "93 octane recommended for best performance", then you better believe that I am going to trust the guys who built the freakin car and buy the 93 goods.

Re: gas

I used to use the low grade gas when I was at school only because the gas prices were so freakin high and that was all I could afford. But now that I have a better job I only use 93 octane and I have noticed a HUGE difference especially with my gas mileage.

I put in Chevorn Supreme in my car once, i don't remember the octane or what not i think it's 93, and my car ran like ****!!. My car seems to run really good with more power on Albertsons gas.
:-\
Don't know why but the regular Albertsons gas does good in my car, when i put higher octane it acts like it wants to stall and looses power and sounds like ****.

According to the manual, you can use Regular, but for best performance 92 octane. Assuming the engine has a knock sensor the timing will be retarded if knocking is detected. On an older engine there may be a build up of deposits in the combustion chamber/piston crown, and this would increase the compression requiring higher octane gas. My GXE has low milage and runs without any pinging on regular.

I've followed this whole discussion, and I'm fairly novice in the engine dept. Could anyone describe the 'knock' or 'tick' that I should keep an ear out for, and when I should be listening for it.

Well usually the tick is a VTC failure. The only problem is i got the VG30E which doesn't have the VTC problems the VE30DE has. So the pistons would probably be my next guess ya. And the ticking is just right when you start your car up it goes *tick tick tick tick tick tick tick* then stops.
haha
