Does anyone know how to tell if bad sound is a result of a speaker or an amplifier?
Here is my dilema. I have a '92 with a factory Bose system. About one week ago the rear speakers started fuzzing out at lower volumes (I don't play the stereo loudly.) I cannot decide if it is a blown speaker cone or a bad amp.
One more thing, the problem is inconsistent. Sometimes is sounds very clear but bassey. The system seems to have very good low end sound almost too good. It almost thumps.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I am debating replacing the whole thing.

Given the problem is inconsistent, I'm willing to bet that it is your amp. I blew a rear speaker before in my other 91 Maxima and just like any speaker, it popped at times. I replaced it and it was fine. However, your problem is indicative of an amplifier issue. I'd go to a local junkyard and temporarily replace your speaker to rule it out. Make sure you put it in and listen to it from inside the car though, where it's designed to be.

Just recently, I've replaced both rear amps on my black Maxima and have fixed an intermittent speaker volume issue. I have stronger 89 - 90 Bose amps in there from an 89 GXE. It is amazing how much it bumps now- so much so that I have turned the base in the negative level and adjusted the balance forward.
