Say, Traxtar944, in exploring a custom job I am working on that involves incorporating tail ilghts of a different car into the project vehicle, it made more sense to cut the tail light buckets out of the donor vehicle rather than try to fab such a pocket out of fiberglass to blend with the final project car's body work. If you use R34 buckets for the Skyline tailights (taking a little extra sheetmetal to trim later) you ought to be able to weld in the mounting surface for the tail lights. In the end that seems a lot more structurally sound for the back end of a 3rd gen. Whadiya think?

Do you have ANY idea how hard it would be to get a pocket from a r-34???

Glass can be used for the sake of a speedy install, but lacks the tweaking properties that metal had. Metal is the way to go for sure.

....Then again I donno what I'm talking about.

YEah I tried to source the rear clip from a skyline, and it was not worth it. Over $1000 to ship it from Europe. Australia is about the same, since it's further but the exchange rate is better (not for long). Getting one sourced from Asia is even more costly. Ideally though, that would be the easiest way to integrate them.

I was also thinking about getting a rear clip from a Maxima and just making the pocket in that, then welding it up right onto my car. That was I can still drive the car around while I work. Doing all this work on a DD isn't easy, since downtime gets in the way of leaving your house.

Matt, isn't there a boneyard somewhere in Europe or Japan that has a website with an English translation capability that would allow you to specify just cutting out the steel tail light pockets for this project?
If not, I have a buddy over in Germany who is fluent in English and maybe we can find just what you need to do this project 1st class w/o a big outlay of $$. What kind of car is it again? A Nissan Slyline GTR R34? What year? Two-door? Four door?

Well...it would be from a 4Dr R34 Skyline. I'm not sure what years the R34 was available to and from. It's like 96-01 or something. I'd just need the pocket where the light bolts on to. That way I'd just cut out the quater panel and trunklid of the Max and weld in this piece. That's making it sound much easier than it would be, but it really shouldn't be too difficult since the cross section of the 4dr R34 quarter panel is almost identical the the 3rd gen Maxima.

I think by R34 Skyline we are all referring to the style of tail lights available on the 10th generation Skyline in Japan and other lucky countries that came in a variety of trim levels, and body and driveline configurations. They were manufactured for model years 1998-2002. The sedan tail lights have blinkers below the round lenses and don't have the rear fender flair bulges on the outside edge of the housing like the GT-R versions do.

Exactly...which is also why they match up to the body lines of the maxima almost perfectly. Plus, I like the blinkers beneath the dual circles. It makes it look LESS like an impala (Thank god).
