My friend has a 2001 subaru 2.5rs Impreza and he changed his ECU chip by disconnecting his battery for 45 mins and then driving aggressively. Would this work on a 1990 maxima, or is there a different way to do it???
thanks in advance.

Huh!?!?!

I'm no expert on Subies, but how the hell does that work?? anyways for our cars you have to buy an upgraded unit from JWT, Superchips or JET. JWT is highly reccomended...will run you $500+ I've heard its very effective after all your I/E, etc. mods are done.

Learning ECU

I suspect it has forced the ECU into a more aggressive program. Some of the learning ECUs can change their shift patterns based on the inputs that it gets.

So if you disconnect the ECU you are resetting it, then if you drive aggressively it will assume that this is the norm.

Reset

It should do. Some people disconnect the battery overnight. You can do it also via the ECU diagnostic screw, but the battery method is the easiest.

Re: Reset

So I was curious about this....
When you reset the ECU in the maxima, does it take the first 15 minutes of driving after the reset to 'learn' the driving style. I always see people saying to reset the ECU after each mod so it can take advantage of it, but how exactly does this process occur?

I do not know as to timeframe, but what it does is gets signals from the various sensors and uses those readings to set the baseline for the ECU map after it has been reset.

My Nissan dealer maintains that all mods should be 'plug 'n play' as the earlier ECUs are quite 'dumb'. From my experience though it isn't quite that dumb.
