Lightweight wheels...

Now that I have the max resurrected, I would like to proceed with my plans as they were prior to hitting the deer...

Here's where you all come in

I was searching for wheels that are either black or gunmetal that are 16" or 17"...but here's the kicker

what is the lightest wheel that you guys know of that might fit this description??? And have any of you seen anything like this for sale lately? Thank you for your help!

I wanted to post in here to get more 3rd gen responses, but if I need to/should have posted in the Tires & Wheels forum, just let me know...

I'd say check out TireRack. From there, I like the Kosei K1-TS and WedsSport SA-70 for looks, weight, and width, but I'm not positive on their offsets even though TR says they'll fit. I'd check out the wheel/tire forum to make sure once you're set on a size. Anyway, either weighs between 14 and 17lbs apiece, and they aren't cheap, but as you didn't mention a price range...

SSR or Motegi Trak Lites are the current wheels I would choose. That, or try to find some 350z Track Edition wheels, but they won't be black or gunmetal. Looked hot on Jeff's car. Work Emotions can be found in gunmetal or black and they are hot looking.

If you can find a set of Centerline RPMs in Black Pearl, those are some of my favorites. I had a set on my Maxima and they were forged, 13 lbs each in 17x7. They stopped making that color, IIRC.

One downside is they are ONLY in 17x7 or 18x7.

Here is my car with them (before it was lowered -- the wheel gap is terrible!):

If you see a wheel you like and think it might be light, you might be able to find it on:

Thanks for the help guys! I'm not really set on a style -- some of the same style wheels look totally different or don't cut it while others of the same style look great!

I will definately check those out.. or keep an eye out for some of them used

I would just look for any style that forged, generally they are much lighter and stronger than a cast wheel.

For example: My forged 18x9's with a tire weigh the same as our stock wheels with a tire. A forged wheel thats say 17x7.5 wold be very light weight.

I've noticed that the forged wheels are usually much lighter than nonforged ones.. Before I started searching around for wheels I was always wondering what the big 2do was over the G35 forged wheels... guess now I know

One more question -- I guess there used to be an FAQ on this, but when I do a search and click the linky, it no worky...

anyway, is a universal wheel - say 5 lugs a 5-100 and 5-114 at the same time?? Is that why it is considered universal? The reason why I ask is because I've seen SEVERAL auctions and ads where someone says a 5-100 will fit our cars with a 5-114 bolt pattern...

edit... I think I answered my own question....

cheap and strong and light... 5Zigen FN01R-C. 17x8, 35mm offset is $175 each or so. 17lb.

for 17" wheels, the widest you want to go will be 17x8. if you roll the fenders and get the perfect offset, you can get a 17x8.5"... but if you stay with a 17x8 you'll be better off. you can run an offset anywhere from 25-35mm in 17x8 and be okay.

tires you can run anything from a 225/45/17 to a 255/45/17. if you get the 255s, you'll need to roll the fenders and have the absolute perfect offset. you have something like 11.25" between the strut and the wheel well, and the tire is 11.1" wide. it's close, but they'll fit.

I just put on 235/45/17's Mille Miglia's and the back was rubbing. I also dropped the car 1.6. The tire was rubbing with the tokico strut. Spacers were needed.

Dang, I am about 80 percent sure those Centerlines are my old wheels. I thought I sold them to an .org member in Colorado, but maybe they were resold or I sold it to the poster here and I am mistaken about the Colorado thing.

hahahaha -- yah, I would have already bought those if he had all 4!!!!

I have pretty much decided on a gunmetal wheel as I do'nt want a black wheel with my black car with black tires... jsut a little too much monochrome (although I did have the tan pinstripe removed while it was at the bodyshop) I would like them to stick out somewhat!

So you put 17s on and they had to have spacers. I've put no less than 10 sets of 17s on my car and they all fit without spacers.

Any time you mention something like this, you MUST mention the tire brand/type and wheel offset. without that, nothing else matters.

I agree - the tire size and the offset can play a huge factor! I can't say how many wheel/tire combo's I've found for sale that won't fit...

I'm still new to the whole offset game though.

I am looking to by some Motegi 17x7 wheels with a +42 offset... Is that okay??

The wheels have 205/50/ZR17 tires... the tire calculator shows them to be 1.7% smaller than stock in the total height which is okay by me! Just curious how offset will affect it... Thank you!

depending on the particular brand of tire, they can be wider than others as well.
My falken Azenis 245/45/17 are about 3/4" wider than my Falken Ziex 245/45/17.

there's lots of combinations that will or won't fit.

These wheels have 205 tires...

using a calculator it says that the wheels will be 13 mm closer to the strut housing and in 1 mm from where the outside of stock wheels was...

13 mm doesn't sound like to much... hell, I guess I could sell them if they don't fit..lol oh well...

does 205 sound a little skinny on a 7" wheel?

The best tire sizes for 17s on a 3rd gen should be 215/50/17 or 235/45/17 to stay as close to the stock circumference as possible. Preferred would be the 235s because they are wider.

I didn't think a 205 would fit on a 17x8 rim very well. Are they 205/55/17s? Because a 205/45/17 is way too small, almost 5% off. 205/50 would be closer.

I put rear spacers (5mm) on my previous wheels because I wanted them closer to the fender (I thought it looked better). They were 17x7 +42mm. They fit fine without rubbing and I had 235/45/17.

Well, the wheels I found already have Faulken 205/50/17 on them and they are a 17 x 7 wheel... it is a bit skinny, heck - thats what my stock 15 tires are.. but I figured it would get me by since they are practically new until it was time to purchase some new tires...

also - when you added the spacers (as I think the wheels would look better setting more even with the fenders) - did you have to extend the studs? or was it not enough to warrant getting extended studs...

Thanks for all your help guys - I did the circumference calculator on these wheels compared to my stock wheels and it said the wheels/tires I am looking at are 1.7 % off - or 1-2 mph slow...

Mine fit fine with the current studs, but it was only 5mm. I was not going to put them on the front. I just kind of figured on the back it would be a little safer, overall.
