I found out how to make the clock white

I know people occasionally wonder if it might be possible to do this, and I have as well. For a while I wanted to make the Maxima clock white to match the SE gauge cluster.

My answer has finally come, and the moment of epiphany happened when I recently rode in a 92 Integra, and saw how similar its clock was to ours, but with white digits. Same country of origin, same time period, possibly the same automotive electronic supplier. I decided it was worth the $10 gamble, and picked up a clock on eBay. The display looks identical to ours, I'm waiting until replacement capacitors arrive in the mail, and then I will transfer the Integra display to the spare Maxima clock I have. Here is a photo to hold you all over until the soldering begins:

If you apply red tint to the display glass it will turn white, no need to swap displays.

Replacement capacitors were needed because the ones on my spare Maxima clock are busted. I got a clock from a 90 Integra, but that generation was around from 90-93, so any of those should work as long as they didnt change the clock part way through it.

You might if you're lucky, they tend to just throw in some random ones. You'll have better luck going to a local electronic/hobby store, or an online electronic component place like Digikey, which is what I used.

I ordered some other stuff at the same time too though, if you're just ordering some capacitors then the shipping will make them unreasonably expensive.

white Integra clock + tint of any color = clock of any color, but I dont think I'm ready to accept clock orders just yet.

You would think so. I completely expected digital gauges to instantly change from green to purplish bluish by overlaying a sample of red tint and it does nothing but turn it white.. I assume it has to do with the ultra luminescent wavelength

of light emitted by the resistive logical display.

Uh, yeah something like that White may be a different story though. Hope it goes smoothly. Desoldering can be a PITA. PSP posting is almost as bad

I tried that too...saw it on the 4th gen forum. It was said it would change the clock to blue, but it didn't work at all for me.

it's most likely it's own assembly, just requiring a power source....just like ours.

Notice there are 3 capacitors, and that long green thing which I cant recall the name of. And why do the buttons on yours look chopped off?

So... I transfered the display tonight, and it "works" fine. maxima_man, I think your dad probably did a good enough job, but you just had a bad clock to begin with, since it is missing parts.

The interesting thing is this: it is still GREEN. The exact same color as the oem clock. It must be the plastic in front of it which entirely determines the color.

kinda like in the integra, it is actually red....right? if it's the plastic outer screen, just replace it with a small rectangle of clear or clear black plastic maybe? I was 'hawking' this to see how it would turn out....also, upon taking apart the clock itself, did anyone ever happen to notice what color the clear plastic was, that the clock shows through?

I threw mine away too early, so I never looked at the color. You cant really reaplace the viewer part without making it look like crap, because its all one piece that snaps in and has the holes for buttons.

the plastic is a dark grey color. The whole thing is actually almost see-through if you take off the front cover. Be carefull though, I've broken 3 clocks trying to snap off the face to change the color. It'll crack before you know it, with hardly any pressure at all.

If you're careful and dont rush, the brittle plastic clips wont snap. Thats true of just about any harness and doodad in all cars.
