I have a 92 SE Automatic.

Here is my problem:

When I put the shifter in 1st, the transmission goes in 1st gear. When I put it in 2nd, it's still in 1st gear. When I put it in Drive, it goes in 2nd gear. When I shift it half way in to N and go back to Drive, it goes into Drive. When I want to go from Drive to Reverse, I have to go half way into Park and then back to Reverse.

It sounds to me like the cable needs an adjustment. If this is the problem, does anybody know the best way to fix it? Thanks.

It sounds like.....

a bad shifter bushing to me...you can pick up one at your local dealer for about $2. now I'm not 100% sure that thats your problem, but the symptoms sound very similar to a worn shifter bushing.

Re: It sounds like.....

The problem with the shifter is only in one direction. So, it doesn't feel lose. It doesn't mess up on both sides of each gear. Do you still think this is the problem? I can't think of a better way to explain it. Thanks for your help.

Well.....

hers was my prob....I had just gotten my trans rebuilt, and everytime I started up the car heres what would happen-->

-shift from "P" to "D"---> car would rev, but not move like it was in Neutral
-if I shifted from "P" to "1" then to "D"---> car would act normally and drive off, no probs my mechanic(who put in the trans) told me it was the shifter bushing, I took the car back in and he fixed, took a real short time and after that no probs!

my "P" to "R" OR "D" to "R" shift was fine, so thats the only factor that differs in our two problems, but I'm 99.9% sure its the bushing. but if its not that, then I'd agree with you that its the linkage(cable)...I'm not sure on the repair process of that, but maybe one of the other guys knows...

i think i have that same problem. in "d" my car doesnt move and just rev's like it's in neutral. i have to hold back on the shifter and then it will finally engage drive. it's like it's in "d" but it's loose all the time. arent there two bushings? and which one did you replace? any tips/hints? TIA

That doesn't sound like it's my problem. Each one of my gears is a little off in only one direction. I am just going to check out the cable to the shifter. I just don't know how. Thanks for the info.
