i have a 90 gxe with 120k on which the timing belt needs replacing. has anyone ever done this themselves? how hard is it? briefly what is involved?
if it is too complicated for a novice to do, how much does it cost at the dealership?
thanks

Gunman,

I've changed my own timing belt and it's quite easy.
You have to have a impact wrench, air rachet, an air
compressor, various craftsman tools, and channel locks.
With these tools you'll be removing wheel, all the belts,
disconnect radiator hose, pulleys, timing belt covers,
and maybe waterpump whether it's good or not.

You'll initially have to set the pistons at TDC so you
can align the timing marks. If you have a FSM you should
have no problems or else you'll have to pay $300 to the
dealer get the job done.

If you really want to do this on your own, and don't have
a FSM, then I can give you detail instructions on how to
do this. You'll be burning about 4-8 hours if you have all
the tools. There is one specialty tool you need to pull the
crankshaft pulley. You can get all specialty tools from
Autozone. They loan them out. Good luck!!!

Mike I would love to help you do this I can do it in 2 hours replacing water pump, cam and crankshaft seals but I live in oregon, I charge people 100.00 plus factory parts at my cost. but since you are looking into this i strongly recommend replacing, Tensioner bearing, Camshaft seals, and the front crank seal and quite possibly a waterpump being that you cant remove the water pump without removing all the timing covers you may as well look into replacing it also. anyways good luck, if there is anyway I can help Email me.
