I would like as much serious information from people as I can get. I am looking to take my car off the road this winter to do engine work. I was thinking of swapping out the VG and putting in a VE. Then i was going to potentially get a custom turbo doen to the VE. I was informed by someone that there were rumors of someone having done a VQ. I would like to know how easy it is, whether it is possible, if anyone has done it, and also what year VQ they used. I would appreciate all information I get in regards to this. I ask that we keep it to serious information in order to keep the thread short. If you have anything else you would like to talk about you may email me or PM me.

well, anything's possible, but you could strap a VG30DETT in there just about as easy as you could do a VQ.
Dimension-wise the VQ will fit with very small amounts of clearance, but the big problem is the mounting and computers. Assuming you got the ECU connections done correctly (which would require a VQ wiring harness probably), then you have to worry about bolting the engine into place.

Note on the VQ that the engine mounts are on the front and back of the engine-around the strut towers. on the VE/VG, the mounts are on the sides of the block, which correspond to bolting it onto the crossmember running beneath the engine.
Assuming you got that part working- which will require major frame alteration in order to securely mount the engine- now you have to worry about the transmission. It's the same type of deal. THEN you get to find axles that will work to connect the tranny to the wheels. these will probably have to be custom made, or at least take apart a VQ and a VG/VE joint and splice them together- if they'll go together at all.

There's quite a bit of research that's been done on it, but there's a ton left to do, and no one that I know of has successfully gotten past the engine mount issue.

IMHO its a waste to do a VQ swap into a 3rd gen. Hell unless you can find a VE + VLSD trans for a really good price the VG30ET is a better bang for the buck. That engien with just intake, 3in exhaust and 8-9psi would put out more power and alot more torque than a full bolt on NA VQ.

Re: swap

Just so we know where your coming from, what are your ideas for intergrating the plug/dist VQ ignition to the distributorless/coil on plug ignition of the VQ? And how are you going to accomodate the different engine/tranny mounts? Which ac/ps/alt brackets are you going to use? Can they be interchanged easy? Can you use the VQ's compressor on the VG?(ie... refigerant-wise or do you have to change the whole system?) You will need the VQ ecu so how are you going to intergrate the VQ's ecu into the VG's wiring harness?

Your best bet is to get a rear-ended VQ max, a kick-butt team of mechanics, and hope for the best. You might as well graft the front of a VQ Max on your VG. Take lots of pics.
