My neighbors 1987 Ford Ranger 4 banger can chirp between 1-2 if you shift it with more revs

Newbie question

Alright, I just bought a 92 SE 5spd, so I'm a newbie. But my parents owned a 90 GXE before, so I have a little knowledge of Maximas.

Anyways, I've been wondering about the manny trannys. Shifting is delicate work, especially shifting from neutral to 1st and from 1st to 2nd. If i don't shift exactly where the book recommends me to (at 13mph for 1st to 2nd), or I don't carefully match the rpms and let out the clutch super, super slow, the car jerks a lot. Is it just me? I've driven some Jetta IIIs, and they are impossible to shift jerkily, they are smooth shifting cars. Is my clutch sticking? I'm already worried because I can't shift into 1st unless I'm dead stopped, and the shifter feels really rubbery. I already changed the tranny fluid last week, but it doesn't feel any better. Any help/info?

U need to learn to drive a manual... it sounds like you don't know. You may have been in another manual car that seemed easy to drive but that may have been due to a weak clutch, different feel etc. Just get used to this clutch and you should be fine. As far as getting it into first, your synchros may be worn. Try shifting to neutral, releasing the clutch, and then try shifting to first, and don't shift to first if you are going faster than say, 15 mph or so. No offense, but thats my $.02.

Re: Newbie question

You do not need to follow the manual on when to shift.
I have found it easier and smoother to shift with a little higher RPM's. You are never going to enjoy your car to it's fullest potential unless you rev the engine. See how much fun you can have winding second gear out to 5000 RPM's!
