My wifes '94 Bose has stopped working, sort of. Lights on headunit work and I can hear the cd or cassette turning but we get no sound. Occassionally, she can hear a faint click under the dash but my hearing must be getting bad 'cause I don't hear it.

On rare occassions, the unit will play.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to look for, where to begin?

The clicking I had, was a stuck CD. The factory CD's get dusty and the electical mechanism that moves the CD tray gets stuck. It can be fixed. I had it done twice in 10 years. Also, the amps in the speakers go out. Each speaker has it's own amp, and they can be refurbished for about $100 a piece.

Like my sig says, I had the whole system refurbished at a place called Factory Service center in Dallas. You can call them at (214) 221-5355. They do factory work for dealerships nationwide.

Not that this will help...

My original Bose stereo was working fine about 2 or 3 years ago, then it started conking out. First when you turned volume, it made a crackling sound. Then the face light went off completly, tape deck stopped working, then the whole stereo died. Just my little story.

The crackling volume is a short in the ****. Don't know about the rest, might be a wiring harness short, or a connector.

Better yet, the Bose head unit has a fuse in the back that may blow out if you reconnect the battery with the stereo turned on. This happened to me. The fuse sells for about 50 cents.
