After nailing down to a faulty injector that was causing my problem with the shaking of the steering wheel and splattering of the exhaust the car was still a bit funny with no power below 2000 rpm.

So the problem was believed to be the timing belt, and guess what? It was; and I changed the belt yesterday, and now the car is reving blissfully and the power is back on tap.

Apparently somone had stuffed around with the belt when getting to the water pump and did not put it back on in the right position. The things you dont see when buying a car!!

But there seems to be more problems (I guess this is what you get for buying a cheap maxima at a auction)!

Now the auto transmission is a bit funny!

First gear change is very hard and rough with the needle holding its rev for at least 1 second before changing to second? When this happens you can feel the harshness in the change!

Is the auto tranny gone? Or does the first gear need servicing and repair? I just changed the trans fluid yesterday too.

P.S I am from Australia, and my heart goes out to all the Americans who have been touched my the deeply disturbing events that has happened.

mmmmm

Hey dude, You already know me..... But yes my tranny does the same.I changed my tranny fluid to castrol transmax z and it sort of better but get the car to do a lot of stop and start driving it get up to what you are saying. Holding for a sec then shifts. I took my car to 2 different auto repairs and they said it is just cause it is a luxury car it is normal or the tranny is just a little lazy. I dont want lazy I want a more positive shift. Can anyone help us out or know what the problem is....

if your tranny is running normally..then the upgrade would be a VB mod/shift kit. it firms up your shifts.
but if your tranny is slipping now it's on it's way out.

I dont think my tranny is slipping....Its just the first to secound gear shift if just feels a little slow to engauge after driving in heavy traffic with heaps of stop and start driving.... But problem is less when the air con is on. It is such a strange thing.... I just wonder what it is??

Something is Wrong

Hey Kitt,

Sorry for not replying to your email, very busy at work.

Anyway I rekon the mechanics who told you that the tranny is normal are bullsh*#@*#$&!

First of all the fact is that Maxima's dont have a really good auto tranny, second its not normal for a proper transmission to delay in gear change.
Either the mechanics dont want to fix it because it is too much trouble or they dont know how to fix it...i suggest in taking it to a transmission specialist that have had experiences with Maxima trannys.

My tranny I believe is definetly slipping between first and second. Then again it feels like the computer is not reading to change into second. Because it will just free rev for more than a second and then harshly jerk into second.

I believe it could be something to do with the car running out of timing for too long that the tranny has gone bad??

Anyway going to take it to a specialist by consulting my mechanic buddies.

I will inform when I get it fixed...hopefully

Timing

Before I had my timing belt changed, the car was very OK.
It just happen after the water bump changed and the timing belt also changed.

Read my orginal post and you can see that I have stated that my car was out of timing because who ever fixed to water pump had get to the pump by removing the timing belt. What they stupidly did was to make markings on the timing belt casing with liquid paper! so to try and put it back in the correct place and match the correct position for right timing. Wish I had a photo to show you...

Any way I can say that 99 % chance that your timing belt is off! Due to being placed back at a wrong position by fixing the water pump.

Go and see your mechanic who did the job and tell him where to go

Can anybody tell me the accuracy when installing the timing belt !
Is it possible if there is just a.. little off..?
My case, the car run just fine..(I think the timing is ?? OK ??..not sure.),
but it is not the same as before, there is huummm when it starts changing to the next gear (A/T transmission).

What is wrong with using a little liquid paper to ensure that you don't move the cams while the belt is off? I know there are already marks on the pulley, but they are harder to see than liquid paper... you can get liquid paper to line up perfectly. (The normal cam marks are just harder to see. You still have to make sure that the belt lines up on the marks on the cam, but I used the liquid paper to make CERTIAN that the cams never moved while I had the belt off.

I don't see the harm in it?

WHAT WEATHER ARE YOU IN?

YOU MENTIONED..HOW with the ac on it is worse. Do you have a tranny cooler? THe older a car gets - well the older the engine gets. I might also add a tranny cooler...it makes sense - witht he ac on your car shifts better you say - I can relate..when you are driving in the higher greas your cooling off the engine with the wind blow. At lower speeds that is not there - but the a/c helps compensate..A tranny cooler will give you the effect of an a.c on ll the time with it off.... won't solve it perfectly - but you will ahve to drive your car with many many styops w/out a/c to get the effect. it is all about the heat under the hood.

Yes I appologise about my statement on the stupidity of liquid paper use...as I have found out personally from my friend who is a mechanic that using liquid paper is a common thing. I was just jumping to conclusions to vent my frustration on my car with the timing being way out I guess .

But I do believe you have to be carefull when you do use it and like you said make sure that everything lines up.

No applogy needed. I just didn't understand what the problem was with doing it. In fact I had heard that it was a good idea, by several of my mechanic friends. I can understand your frustration... I had a nightmare trying to track down a "ticking" sound after I did my timing belt.

Take care,
