Problem with Speedo.

Whats up guys, well after 6 months after the installation of the SE Gauge cluster, the speedo goes out today. It was weird cause it was working as i hit the highway speeds, it all of a sudden went down and i had to slow down to what seemed normal. Does anybody know what the problem could be ? It just went out all of a sudden, any info would be very helpful and appreciated, Thank you.

It maybe a loose connection. Is your odometer still ticking over or has that stopped too?

I had the same problem happen to my 92 SE. Check your Circuits. Chances are, one's probably burnt out. I forget exactly what was the matter, but to fix the gauge thing, for the time being, they rerouted the wiring from my backup lights, which are rarely noticed anyway. This fixed the problem. Your best bet would be to take it to the dealer, and they'll let you know what exactly happened. You can decide what to do after that.

Re: Re: Problem with Speedo.

The problem is only the speedometer, Everything else works except the speedometer. I changed my recently bought SE gauges to my Stock GXE gauge and still the same, on the GXE guages also, everything but the speedo works, is there any fuses i can check or anything ? any help would be appreciated, thank you

how about the speed sensor? i heard if you change to an SE cluster, you gotta get the SE speed sensor cuz its a little different from the GXE sensor.

If the odometer is still ticking over then the speed sensor is still working. As for the SE vs GXE sensor I don't think there is any difference. The speedo cluster has a micro which proceses the signal to drive the speedo dial and is calibrated accordingly for SE or GXE model. The only difference in the sensor would be for fit into the transmission, 5-spd versus auto etc.

However, this doesn't resolve the fault. Take the cluster back out and check all of your harnesses and clean all your contact points. It maybe dry joints on the speedo PCB.

If you have no odometer and no speedo then I would say it is the speed sensor, or the connection from the speed sensor into the factory wiring looms.

The sensor is not too expensive and easy to replace. I tried replacing my sensor thinking it was the problem and found out it wasn't the problem. Returned the new sensor and got my money back.

I have heard of one person whose sensor had come loose from the transmission housing which caused the speedo to stop.

Brent, is there any way to check if the sensor is still connected to the tranny ? Everything else works on the Cluster ( temp, gas, tach ) just the Odometer and the Speedometer is out, Oh and.... How much is a new speed sensor and where's it located ? thanks a lot for your time.

Same problem!!

I had the same problem now for 2 months.. I took out the speed sensor once and couldn't really determine if it that was the problem. But my speedo acts strange sometimes. When I first put my car in drive and move about 15MPH after not driving overnight, it moves for a while. THen it just dies again. This only happens sometimes most of the time it doesn't move at all. I think its my speed sensor but I don't want to buy one until i know for sure. Anyone had this problem?

The speed sensor is located above the transmission. You can reach it if you reach into the engine about 2 inches from the firewall from the driver side. Its a little below the oil filter. It has a black wire coming from it and has a rubber thing on the top of it. To remove the sensor you need a 10 mm (I think) socket wrench or a phillips screwdriver. The wrench works better. When you pull it out you'll know you took out the right thing if you see a plastic yellow gear like thing at the end of it.

Thanks a lot Johnny, I'll check for it tomorrow and if in the worst case, i'll have to purchase a new Sensor, Thanks again.

The sensor is about $100 I think. Removal is as per Johnny's post. You can check the sensor once you have it out if you have a multimeter. Set the multimeter to VDC (volts DC) and stick the two probes onto the pins on the speed sensor plug. Then spin the plastic gears and you should see a voltage signal. No signal then the sensor is stuffed.

Other problems are dry joints on the speedo unit in the dash but with these faults the odometer usually still ticks over.

Hope this helps some.

Re: Same problem!!

Check to see if a fuse is blown. I'm not sure if I remember if it was just my speedo that stopped, or all my gauges. If a fuse is blown, then don't try to replace it yet, because it'll just blow again. I will try to remember to dig up my documentation from the Nissan dealer. Your best bet, though, before investing in a speed sensor, is to check your fuses to see if they're all working properly.

Hey Adreis, wus sup

I've got the same thing going on with mine. When It first started to happen like 6 months ago I checked the speed sensor's voltage output and it was fine ( I think it puts out a AC signal not DC ). I had the same simptoms at low speed it wouldnt run neither would the odometer, at higher speeds it would then jump up and the odometer would run. A while back I saw someone post about lubricating the speedo needle with some graphite lubricant (do a search). If the speedo still works but only at high speeds then I dont think It would be a fuse.

There is no way it will be an AC voltage.

I have a similar problem, except that my speedo works fine, while the odometer works only sometimes. I can't find any info on the odometer in the FSM, though. I'll live with it for now, maybe try to fix it in the spring...

Exact same problem in March. I needed a new vehicle speed sensor. The part was about $135. Do the labor yourself. It is a snap. The sensor is located near your oil filter on the VG30E engine. It is (duh) on top of the tranny. You should be able to find it easily by looking at the new one and then comparing it to what you see in your engine bay. Just take the screws out of the old one out, screw the new one in, and plug it in. Done. Should take five minutes, no shlt.
