Auto Transmission won't shift past 2nd gear

When I put it in D and just drive, my car shifts just fine. Real smooth...no klunking when shifting. But, today, I was driving around in D and I decided to manually downshift into 2nd gear while going 50 mph. It wouldn't shift into 2nd. Or 1st. I came to a stop sign, and then started again while the shift selector was in 1st. The car shifts through all the gears just fine, but the shifter is in 1st. Wierd. Then, I decided to put it in D again to make it shift normal. When I started going again, it would shift from 1st to 2nd just fine, but, it wouldn't go past 2nd gear. But, it would go into neutral and reverse and park, just fine. The only way I could get it to shift normal while in D, was to shut the car completely off and then start it again. I put it in D and it worked great. But, the same problems arised when I tried to shift into 1st or 2nd gear manually.

Has anyone had any problems close to this one? I heard the transmission shifts on fluid pressure. Could my pressure be to low or too high? Clogged tranny line? I also heard it's not the whole tranny that is dying b/c it shifts smooth and normal if I just don't mess with the shift selector. Please let me know what kind of problems you have had. Thank you.

A thought

Did the P/C button flash repeatedly after you shut the car off and turned it back on again? When the tranny has a problem, it goes into safe mode and won't shift out of second. The flashing indicates that it has, in fact, gone into safe mode. Maybe when you tried to shift into second at 50, you ****ed the computer off and it did that to you.

I didn't see any flashing lights. Which light would flash if there was a problem? the P light? My C light bulb is blown. And when would the light flash if there was a tranny problem, after the car shuts off? Thanks for replying.

I don't know of that many people who actually shift into "2" or "1".
If the car runs fine on "D" then just leave it in that position and quit fiddling with it.

I have thought of that, and it is a great idea. But, I have a warranty on the car and I would like to fix everything I can before it runs out.

wow ,what on earth are you thinking, downshifting from D to 2nd from 50 MPH some people may tell you that it wont hurt the car but mentally to me thats a drastic change the tranny has to go through and maybe got some thing in the tranny locked up, shifting from 1st to 2nd to D is a different story though ,but i would just stick to D,and if i feel like living on the edge i will put her on power mode

I can't understand why downshifting to 2nd at 50 mph is such a bad thing. My second gear will stretch all the way to 75+ mph. When I step on the gas, it downshifts automatically to 2nd at 50. I was just testing the tranny to see if it would shift when I tell it to. And it failed. Thanks for replying.

it may go up to 75 but when its at 75 and in D its in 4th gear so you skipped a gear going down to 2nd and it had to catch up with itself and had to do 3rd gears job and just couldnt hack it,get me,this is the way my mind thinks, each gear helps each other when one gear has to do 2 jobs he may not be able to do it,and now theres a problem......dont listen to me my head is not on right i just lost my baby
