Bad Speedometer
I had this problem on my 92 SE. I made the mistake of replacing the speed sensor at the transmission, which was not the problem (it's a pretty healthy piece of hardware). After replacing the speedo head itself, however, I was in good shape. I got the part from Cherry Hill Nissan (the best prices I've found!!) in New Jersey (1-800-981-PART) for $136.94 + shipping ($10.00 to Indiana). This was three years ago, but I'm sure the price is about identical now. I'm not sure how handy you are, but it's not too difficult of a task to replace it...2 hours tops.

Does it also make a sound? Kind of a whirring? I don't know if it's the same on the max, but one of my old cars had this problem, and we solved it by spraying some silicon lubricant on the speedo cable.
Just a thought.

Maxima's do not have a speedometer cable. The signal is sent electronically from the "driver" on top the transmission to the guage. 9 times out of 10 this "driver" or whatever you want to call it, goes bad. This has been addressed on other posts. One screw holds the device in place and is found on the driver's side of the transmission. Unplug the wires to it and put the new one on. That easy. Parts must be cheaper in my area becuase it was cheaper to replace this piece (like under $100) than it would had been to replace just the speedometer gauge (new like $150 dollars) and this is just the gauge, not the entire cluster assembly. I thought the assembly was the problem on mine at first, it wasn't, but I still got a whole assembly for $80 at a junkyard. Replaced my old one, found it was the driver on the tranny, and left the assembly from the junkyard in and sold the white gauges to a GXE owner for over $100.
