dont know if this is a transmission problem

I recently started to notice that sometimes when Im stopped at a light, and begin to take off I will press on the gas and the engine will just rev and then start to move but with a jolt. I also noticed in slow traffic if I come to a stop I will feel the bottom of the car move as if the tranny went into a nother gear or something. I checked the fluid its bright red and no leaks to my knowledge. Is this a sign of a dying tranny? The car is a 92 Se auto.
Thanks for any input

Check your mount first.

I'd check the mount, the trans fluid level, and then your bank account.

well downshifts can be felt... if you are slowing down and your engine is at idle speed and you keep slowing down, it will kick down a gear to keep the RPM at or above idle. so you can feel it, especially at about 6mph when it kicks back to 1st. as for the other thing, yeah the mounts, but also, as your shifter adjusted properly? is there any chance that it's slamming from neutral to drive? just a thought, but the mounts are more likely.

I had a similar problem a few days ago. When accelerating from a stop, the car would jolt forward. Also shifts were very rough. It ended up being one of the motor mounts that had broken.

Pshhh. I've been driving without a reverse for like 5 months now. Only "Drive" works, and it feels like it's stuck on 3rd gear since it accelerates really slow but gets to 60 mps on the highway. Auto trasmissin on this car is crap.

true. When i have to go forward in my car, i have to go past drive all the way to 2nd gear and THEN go back up. If i o straight to Drive, it acts like it is in neutral. This is the same w/ every gear. I can barely get it to go into 1st gear. I have noticed also that i hae that jolt also, but i dont think i am getting the same thing you are.Mine just takes a split second to get going.

sounds like you are in need of a shifter bushing

What's shifter bushing? Don't mind the question, I've only just started taking interest in actually going under the hood myself.

at the end of the shifter linkage there is a little plastic bushing that gets worn out and causes the shifter positions to be a bit off.

your transmission is in failsafe mode. it is stuck in 3rd. and i think that's because reverse is broken, it's being on the safe side.

Ahh, guess shifter bushing won't help me then. As for the fail safe mode, I don't suppose there's a way to override it? Not that I really need to, but it would be nice to at least have a 1st gear again, even with no reverse.
