the timing belt i took out looked brand new(almost), and had no scarry wear. ive had the car for 'bout 30k miles. last known replacement was 91k and its at almost 221k

they may have replaced the pump then.
it *looks* okay, and i couldn't afford a $130 pump (never going duraKrap again)
They aren't prone to failure at any mileage but if it leaks, then you are stuck doing a timing belt again to change it, best case scenario. You cant see when its going to go, the impeller or seals might be about to come apart and outside would look fine. The fact that the belt might have had 140K is really scary to me and if the water pump is original, well it would have the time to replace it, just cheap insurance. I dont know where you got that pump price, its only $27 for one from our friendly in-house internet auto mart

If the car was garage kept and its not a dry area, it might, mine didn't look 14 years old when I took it out, but it was. As for the water pump, Im sure its not leaking, doesn't mean it wont start next week, or the impeller inside isn't rotted through, or the shaft is weakened and could fail next week. I hope none of this happens to you of course but thats the nature of mechanical things, usually they work until they dont......... Im not flaming you for not doing it, I just feel better safe than sorry.
