Quick question
Quick question
I was just wondering if there is a reason the original Maxima rotors look like someone cut off a piece of them with a plasma cutter. What's the purpose of that flat portion, does anyone know?
Yeah, there's a little 2 inch flat portion that cuts off a side. I assumed everybody had it, since both, my parts car and my actual cars have those cuts on all rotors. But I'll take some pics if you guys still don't know what I'm talking about. It's not a big deal, I was just wondering.
heh, yeah. reminds me of this guy http://www.performanceprobe.com/foru...994#post270994, who REALLY needed to be pointed in the right direction. i had to explain my contribution TWICE (read post 40) and he will probably still tell me i don't know what i'm talking about.
anyhow back on topic, that method of balancing the rotor kinda reminds me of how newer acura rims are balanced, with the weights on the inside, rather than around the bead. Though i'm not sure if putting on a new tire means they've got to unglue something, or heat it until it comes off or what... or to balance the other side in a continual frenzy of weight-adding or what... But i guess it's in the sake of making it look 'cleaner' and saving the rim from having scratches when you go from a large weight to a small weight (leaving a scratch spot where the big one used to be) when you get new tires.

yo Deridex can we still get a pic or two just so people who search and find this thread in the future can see what you were talkin' about? I'm kinda curious myself, b/c my front rotor didn't have anything on it that looked 'weird' to me..
That particular one came off of my parts car. I got it last spring from some Mexican guy. Maybe he towed it without the front wheel. Can't imagine why he would do that though.

now everyone is saying that those rotors look like they'd been run without wheels... but on BOTH his cars? that's just bizarre coincidence, or someone is cutting them on purpose
Nawh, my other car doesn't have it. Could've sworn it did though. But there was no vibration or noise or anything. Gapboi, you impress me with your superior knowledge of cars. Here's what I think about safety

well it may be easier to have someone cut them rather than unbolting the torque members? i have no idea really but is the cut surface smooth or rough? that may indicate to you how it was cut/ground, by examining the surface, if not already too rusted to tell.
I don't know what kind of junkyards you have where you live but nobody at any of the ones I have been to are going to put in that much effort when they can just refuse to sell a specific part.
