E-brake cables

A couple of months ago, my emergency brake broke. its frustrating driving a manual, and when i have to get out of the car for a second, I have to shut the car off, and put it in gear, and [blah de blah...]

anywho, I was wondering what the locations of usual failure are, and how/where the e-brake cables are broken so i can examine them and find where the cable broke. I am primarily wanting to know where the single cable from the handle meets the two to the calipers.
the fsm doesnt have the routing info, as far as i can find.

Thanx

the junction is RIGHT under the handle body... so, right behind the place where the cable peeks out from the ebrake area under the car, above the catalytic converter. swing cable out and up to remove from that thing... bolts in a few places along the way. GREAT pic on BR-27 in the FSM

Agree with capedcadaver, mine broke right under the parking brake lever where the adjusting nut meets the cable. Not hard to replace but you need to get under the car, as well as in the cabin. In the 1993 FSM, diagram and adjustment procedure are on BR-22 and 23.

haha, mine's no broken though, I just know this b/c i went to a junkyard and pulled 2 rear struts for a disc brake swap. haven't isntalled yet b/c one of the calipers needs replacement (torn piston boot... and bolt broke off into slide pin), as well as pads and rotors, which i can't afford at the moment.

thank you everyone. matt, those pictures are helpful, except it doesnt show the heat sheilds in the way
since i dont have time to disassemble everything at the moment, i want to make sure the single cable from the handle is this part.
does anyone know if it includes the boot and bracket to connect the three cables?
the other two cables are kinda obvious on the diagram page

You've gotta replace the whole cable anyway so whats the point of finding the location? or if you're concerned about which side, just jack the car, set the ebrake and see which wheel is spinning freely, either way you gotta take it apart whether for one side of the other

One of my ebrake cables is broke and neither wheel engages. Where the cable splits off theres a piviot and if one doesn't work nether does. Kinda sucks...

Ok that being said, just change it for a whole new one since you still have to take it all apart!

My E-Brake is stuck while engaged. I am not the most mechanically inclined (but I'm not too stupid either), but I can't afford to go to a shop, so I am hoping its pretty easy to fix on my own.

I am wondering if there is an easy way to release it without having to tear apart the car. The lever doesn't work except to pull it tighter.

The car has a few more problems (550,XXX miles on it though), but this is the most immediate. I am hoping to get some good help here so I can work on getting this thing a little more reliable for my girlfriend and daughter.

Thanks in advance...

Sounds like the cable is getting stuck/hung somewhere. That's the only reason it wouldn't release. If you jack the rear of the car up and look in between the two rear wheels you can see the assembly and how it operates. If you get a helper to mess with the ebrake handle while you're under it watching you should be able to find the issue.

Of course, if you're up north and the car has alot of rust that could be the major culprit.

And dang you have 550k on it?? More details please! Is it the original engine? Any major replacement/repair work done? That is truly impressive

I temporarily disconnected cables from both calipers - requires only jacking up rear wheels, one at a time. Use this on your own risk - I was the only driver and what was acceptable to me might not be so in your case. I replaced cables later and now I have working ebrake again.

Original motor and tran. The previous owner took amazing care of it. Then my girlfriend bought it, and her ex practically ran the thing into the ground. I need to get it back into alright condition until I can get my car back on the road.

As far as I know the most major repair to the car was the instrument panel. I am going to need to change the tachometer here soon though. Its stuck now. Other than that oil, brakes, tires, spark plugs... The usual. I did have to replace the blower motor the other weekend now that we are starting to hit single digits.

I have never done that before, and I think I bumped some flap or another because its stuck on ac, but that's easy enough to figure out since I was working in a pretty small area.

I think there also might be something wrong with the fuel system though... It is getting really awesome gas mileage compared to before the problem started, but now it has lost a lot of power, and sounds and feels like it is about to shut off sometimes as if the gas tank is empty. Almost like there is a pinch or blockage in the lines somewhere.

Thanks for the advice for the e brake problem. I think it might be worked out though. I backed into my parking space yesterday morning, and last night when I left it seemed like it had let go. I'm still going to check it out this weekend though.

Thanks again for the help...

Original transmission?

Is your car an auto or SE manual? That's incredibly impressive either way, but downright miraculous if that's an auto. Those autos normally won't/can't even make it to 150k

Automatic. It was a granny car before my girlfriends ex got his POS fingers on it. I am planning on getting at least another hundred thousand out of it unless I can get my other two cars on the road again before that, but that will be about six grand if I do all the work on my own. Oh well... I have always wanted to learn...

you would probably get something, my cousin had a Ford truck that rolled to over 1,000,000km and Ford gave him a jacket and some other stuff, someone stole the jacket later though

Chrome: Nice. I could always use some free stuff. Maybe I could talk them into giving me a good deal on what's left for repairs.

James: LMFAO

Gunther: No insult. I took it as a joke. Its all good.
