looking at the pics, the pathy dist is a lot longer- possibly for clearance reasons somewhere... maybe you can pull the front (left) valve cover off them without pulling the dizzy?
either way, they're obivously different, so what' the point in bothering to swap them? Maxima VGs are a dime a dozen in junkyards, so it's not like they're hard to find.

as for putting a maxima distro on a pathy or pu... the longer neck probably was there to get it up and over something, so a shorter distro would probably cause you to either a) not be able to install the distro at all or b) not give you enough room to run the wires into the cap.

I'm sure the only thing different (other then the cas) is it's going from a vg30 A or B block to a W block and on my pathfinder (its a 90 with vg30e) it is set up the same as the 89 max and my 85, just different valve covers pathfinder = 3rd gen just different color and 2nd gen has oil fill on the other side so on the max it is in front and just a cap as the 3rd is on the back with a neck ( dew to the intake going over it?). the pathfinder uses the same type of oil filter mount as the 2nd gen (right on the block) and the 3rd gen has the oil filter mover so that it is toward the back of the engine, making it easier to get to. you can swap heads between VGs (and even between A or B to W with mods to the gasket) so i would say its a go. or to be sure look up the casting numbers on the heads.
