65 stang wants a piece

a 65 mustang auto 289 200hp stock wants to go against my vg. I have a 89 with cold air, y pipe and i will advance my timing before we go, i also have a stick. The mustang runs 17 flat in the 1/4, and my vg will probably run low 16s, right? Only thing that worries me is the weight of the mustang is 3300 pounds so the power to weight ratio is 16.5 and the torque to weight is 11.5. My power to weight is probably 17.5 and 17 torque to weight, so does my car run a better 1/4 with those numbers against me? theres 100 on the line, and when you bank account has 300 thats alot. Anyway, people that know give me your impressions of the outcome, and thank for reading this long *** break down, it would be a nice kill for the vg though, PEACE

If the stang is an auto, it only has 2-3 gears. Not that great. Even if it had 200hp in 1965, I doubt it's very close to that after about 200-300,000 miles.

yeah i take out the spare, and make sure to have less than a 1/4, but whats the deal with the power to weight ratios being in favor of the stang, does my gear out weight that?

Just make sure it has the 289. If it has a 302 or a 351 like my dad's 67 Mustang had, no way you'll beat him. Good luck with the race.

Nope, the curb weight on our cars is roughly 3100-3200 lbs depending on what year you have. I think they got heavier in 92 for some reason. Not sure, but it's definitely not close to 4100 lbs.

Re: 65 stang wants a piece

hey did you guys race yet? i was just curious because when i was 16 i had a 66 mustang. that would certainly be an interesting race. i am almost positive that the max would win, but those old cars are kinda quick. good luck.

im waiting to get the y pipe on just in case but ill post the result, hes just a **** talker at school with no respect i have been working on my launch, it seems like a 3000 drop always gives too much wheel spin, im probably mashing the gas too quick, im pretty good with a 2 mph roll, but a standstill always means too much spinning

Remember that a drag strip has a much gripier surface than a regular road does so maybe 3000 isnt so bad.

GOODLUCK

Ohh and do me a favor..... When your passing him Look over and wave at him. It will make it all the sweeter 4 you as you pass by. So go show him the real power of a max!!!!!

Re: 65 stang wants a piece

you better be careful. I have a 66 289 and if the rear-end gears have been changed or the heads bored a tad(of course, they will tell you it is stock, but how can you prove it's not) you may have a race you wished you had never started. It could be a trap. My 66 is very close to my 93 and $100 is a lot to just throw out there.
