GF's car I bought off another member on here. It's in the shop now for some other work to get it to pass inspection

Shop I have the car at now is trying to charge me $120 an axle and that seems a little high to me. Or maybe not?

Do it your self. If you have air tools, it only take about 30 mins per corner. Also, most auto parts stores will let you borrorw the spring compression tool for free.

if not for free, for a deposit, get it back upon return(keep reciept!)

and for $120 ea., they better be putting in tok's or gold plated, or something.

Come on guys... we're obviously all not mechanically inclined or have the time or space to do it ourselves. If I could do it myself, wouldn't have asked the question.

then i'd suggest to get a few quotes from a few different places and see what you can whip up price-wise. You may not trust the other guys, or you might, but you also might be able to leverage your trusted mechanic into doing it for cheaper based on the compeditor's price..

i'm gonna suggest you find out how much cheaper it would be if you supplied the parts. tokico can be had for about $275 anywhere, and like DJ98MAXSE said, for a shop, it shouldn't take 2 hours. figure $100/hr shop rate(guesstimating) and you have about the same price.

what is the labor rate for your area?
most reputable shops base their quotes on a labor guide which tells them the accepted time it will take for the repair which is then multiplied by the shop's labor rate.

Strut/spring labor:

the pricing in those estimates are for a $70 an hour labor rate, which is WAY lower than the prevailing rate around here.

Standard rate is about $120/axle for labor, which is insane since it takes about 15 min to swap an axle.

shocks, pay a local member $150 to do it, or you can pay a shop about $600 labor.
