Why you don't reuse O-Rings...
My friend and I changed a broken injector on my VE30DE and didn't have new O-rings at the time so we thought it'd be okay to reuse them. Bad idea because it was fine at first, but it started having trouble starting because of excess gas in the cylinder and then misfiring and backfiring. Then it started to bog down so I had to go back to driving the other car. Keep in mind we did grease them too. Here are a few pictures...

I need to retake the picture of the sparkplugs...it was really fouled badly by the flooding injector...
Runs great now. The only problem now is...all the backfiring has taken its toll on the exhaust system so now I have whistling...bees in a can...plus I can see fumes coming from under the car when I look underneath... Time for new Y-pipe, cat, and muffler

Happened to me when I got my injectors cleaned and tested. One of the injectors didn't have the o-rings properly seated. After all the work me and my dad went through to get the engine to work right, it ended up being that stupid injector. So many wasted weekends trying to diagnose the problem. I could tell you why it took so long; it's a pain in the a$$ to get to the injectors on a VG.

but man those injectors looked like they'd been removed and inserted multiple times on the same set of o-rings as torn up as they were.
may as well do studs while you have the exhaust out. if by chance none are broken already (whistling can be broken studs too) then you're lucky... you can get them all out WITHOUT having to drill them out.

Reason my engine got rebuilt was BECAUSE I had broken studs. My dad couldn't exactly get to the studs on the back of the block, so we just removed the heads and tapped them all out. And while we already had the heads out, we just did a minor rebuild. Didn't need it though, cylinder walls were scorch free and looked like they were brand new. It even impressed my dad lol.

i love how you say "just removed the heads" like "just put it on my iPod instead of bringing the CD"... such a simple task right haha? luckily my good motor is on a stand and the studs can be done with the heads still in-place. though i may remove them anyways for painting purposes.... dunno... that's another $60-100 of gaskets i wouldn't otherwise have to buy. but at least i'd know the head gasket wouldn't blow 1000 miles later from being old... decisions... same with the injectors. i'm swapping in another set of injectors anyways, plus the fact that i want to replace the o-rings to be sure they are NOT like the ones pictured above.

We were considering dropping the engine to have on a stand, but we never went through with it. And my engine rebuild was a long and drawn out process. I still didn't have my license when we started. And it's not SO bad to take out the heads, you just need the time. And while they were out, we were able to get the cams grounded to spec and all the valves checked, ect. Looked sweet after the acid bath too.
