need new ECM

Well the JDM motor is in, started up OK, but it needs a new electronic control module (units on both motors are visibly cracked). The best price I got for a new unit is $280. Good price?

Also, the VTC's on the previous motor are actually good and functional, so I want to hang on to the cylinder heads in case I need to change them. Actually thats pretty optimistic; I should say WHEN I need to change them. I wanted to know, how much of a job will that be? When the time comes, should I remove the VTC's with the camshafts? Is there anything else they're attached to?

I'm not sure of the condition of the heads themselves, since I had that unfortunate overheating problem after the first swap. Thanks for any input.

OK, so was that a boring question? Any input would be fine.

a) go to ebay or a JY for the ECM. I have one from ebay in mine, $65 shipped IIRC. Look for a seller that offers DOA warranty and has feedback in the thousands.

b) Swap heads/cams for VTCs? No way, too much work. I'm surprised you didnt address the issue before swapping in. Did you at least take care of the exhaust studs? Remove the good VTCs, repair them with new springs from the kits, because you will probably regret it if you dont, then swap them into your JDM.

As for answer (a), I didn't like thought of getting something like that from ebay. Even if it came with a full warranty, the pain of returning it and waiting for them to send me another didn't seem worth it. But $65 vs. $280 makes me ponder though...

Far as the VTC's go, the short time I had this motor running, I didn't hear any tick. My only thought was keeping the others for spares. I guess the bottom line is, there'll be no easy way out when it comes time to address the issue. Meanwhile, I'll keep up with the preventive measures, meaning frequent oil changes and the toyo-style filter. Oh well, thanks.

I agree with the J/y idea . I believe mine sells them for under $50, warranty extra(about 10, I think)
