June 1989 Motor Trend Magazine - Maxima vs. Cressida

I bought this magazine on Ebay not too long ago and got it today, I figured it would be neat to see since the 3rd gen was first debuting right around that time. I scanned in pics of all the pages of the article if anyone was interested... and have HUGE copies too (3mb each) Here are the shots:

Testing a GXE AT when they could have used the SE 5-speed.

Since the Cressida didn't come with a 5-speed, they should consider that a handicap, especially since it has 30 hp more and is rwd.

I have a few magazines from 1991, when the VE came out and the Maxima was ranked ahead of all the fwd sedans.

Yeah, I agree... though I think they were going for a "sport-luxury" test, luxury being the largest concern; which is why I think they had the Brougham GXE instead of just a standard one; the Brougham has basically no extra performance aspects to it that I can think of (If I were a tester).

Yeah, I have seen some of the 91' Editions where they vs. it against the Taurus SHO and stuff... I'm gonna try to find some more on Ebay. I just figured I'd get this one since I haven't seen it around anywhere other than the 2 door max photo that's been going around that Nismax1994 posted a while back:
http://forums.maxima.org/6022353-post131.html

I just ebay'd the month/motortrend in the lower left hand corner and one popped up. We should have a thread about what month/magazine's the 3rd gen debutes in so someone can start a collection *cough*

I never knew about the 2 door Maxima thing. I've actually photoshopped my max into being 2 door. However it didn't look so good since I didn't exactly have the glass behind the window on the door that the guy who made that did so it looked trashy.

I ran across a short version of this same write up in one of my old Popular Science books. It left out some of the images and definately removed the two door concept images. I always meant to post but forgot. I always assumed that the Cressida was part why Nissan introduced the VE a couple years into the 3rd gen model line. I see very few Cressidas around anymore. I only first noticed them by mistaking them for a 2nd gen Max at a glance. Of course, I have a much better eye now!

I just learned two things. 1)After all these years I finally know what Nissan's sonar suspension was all about 2)Even the editors back in 89 knew the leather seats in the Max was worthless.

Good find

I doubt the Cressida is the reason for the VE. After all, the Cressida was discontinued in 1992. I really doubt Nissan would have worried about sales against Toyota at the time. Toyota hasn't really caught my attention with any 90s cars except with JDM ones (GT four celicas, etc), the Supra, and the Lexus SCs. Their current lineup at least includes hybrids, the big bad Tundra and the current most efficient pure-gas car - the Corolla.

Back then the V6 Camry was the Maxima's main competition and it was smaller but has just as good of engine so it's a bit unfair to say the Camry is better. The I4 Camry is a match for the Altima though and most Camrys on the road will be the 4 bangers.

I always thought the VE was chasing after 3 series BMW's (Or at least the crowd of buyers) and competing against the SHO Taurus and the V6 Camry's (Even though I don't think the Camry was ever a fair competitor to the third gen)

i think GXE was compteing against camery and se was against bmw 3 series...is dat true?

we have one cressida in our college and we always doin diffrent things on it for learning.....but dyam i thought that cressida came out in 88 or before....no match in body shape wit 3rd gen....3rd gen maxima was way ahead of its competitors that time....

I'm going to agree with that burhangondal.

I've been telling people for a long time that the Maxima is responsible for the way cars are shaped today. If you look at a 91 Civic, 93 Accord, or any other sedan made in the 80s to early 90s nothing is as curvy as a Maxima. Now days though everything is and our girlfriends moms think we have boring old cars.

"ppl dont know S*** about 3rd gens"

Umm bud, people don't know S*** period. People will knock Fords and then buy Mercurys, Lincolns or Jaguars. People will buy V6 Mustangs. People will spend $20,000 on a new car and whine that premium gas costs them an extra 20 cents a gallon. People will tell you you need to buy a hybrid to get good gas mileage when a 92-95 Honda Civic VX Hatchback gets better gas mileage than a Toyota Prius. etc.

This world has too many ignorant people, period.

The "2 dr Max" look sleeker because of the lower body, in whick it will make any 3rd gen max look "sleeker"

While I wouldn't say a Civic is fast, especially one with under 120hp you do have to keep in mind that Lotus are considered fast enough to merit a high price tag and yet at the same time they have fairly wimpy Toyota engines.

I personally hate the idea of using a Honda Civic with the stock engine for anything but fuel economy though a 96-00 Civic weighs like 2300lbs and a 92-95 model would be lighter so we are talking a car that weighs 2/3s of what a Maxima weighs and has about half the horsepower of one so while we can take them pretty easily especially since our stock engine can actually make 300hp on stock internals reliably and I'm sure all drivetrain components on a Civic are as light as Honda could make them for them to come up with such high gas mileage.

The Avalon could NEVER kill the Maxima, it was only available with an automatic where Maximas main selling point was the 5 speed to alot of people. Those of us that don't have the 5 speed have 5 speed envy. I also sincerely doubt the Avalon weighs less than a 3rd or 4th gen Maxima.

The Legend though...I can't really say the Maxima is a fair match for. The Legend was actually produced in a coupe form (which lowered the drag coefficient by .02), had a more powerful engine, and etc. However, a Maxima was worth like $22,000 and a Legend was $38,000 so you could almost buy two Maximas for the price of a Legend.

there is so many things that go into comparing a car. each car is built to do something better than something else. the question is what the important thing is to you.
to some bragging rights on HP was important, to some it was power to weight ratio, others the availability of a stick, yet others wanted a coupe. the variables that go into buying a car are so wide that there is room for more than 1 best car.
back in 94 I would have probably gotten a Bonneville SSEi I actually got an SSE in 96. nowadays it is a different story

sorry i used to won a legend, and the 3rd gen ve/vg would kill the 2nd gen legend.
if it was a type 2 engine/5spd then thats more for the ve-5.

i like the 1st gen legend but the looks on the 3rd gen max is what prevents me from getting another one.
that and interior engine bay space.oh and power....

Is somebody making fun of the auto's shifting? Last I checked if you didn't switch it over to comfort you could definitely feel the shifts if you ride it hard.

"In both interior and exterior styling, the Cressida seems much closer to something from a Detroit design studio than anyone would have believed possible ten years ago."

Is it just me or does that read like a compliment?
