Colder A/C ...Maybe?

My heater control valve doesn't close. It is always in the open position. I am not sure why and never really bothered to troubleshoot it. Now we are in the hotter months I decided to just tie strap the valve closed. It seems the a/c cools doen just a little bit quicker. I am really pleased with my a/c performance anyways. It is the original R-12 and everyone notices how cold it is. I think the 5% tint makes a huge difference too.

R 12 does cool better than R134a. the tint helps block some light from reheating the air inside and having the heater fully off really helps. but R-12 is better, dont retrofit unless you have too and get a shop to purge the R12 before you crack the lines open.

R12 is significantly better (I've heard like 10%) than R134a as far as cooling performance goes. R134 is only used because its more environmentally friendly as far as I know. Personally, if I had R12 I'd use it till it was time for a refill and then I'd go ahead and retrofit when the R12 runs out.

dupont doesnt make it anymore. supply and demand....

I had a wild idea the other day. my parents are throwing away one of those huge deep freezers, which still works. I had a wild notion of having an ac guy remove the freon and put it in my car.. couple of problems with this. a) no fill/remove valves (factory sealed, if it loses coolant, its gone) b) not r12.
hoo well.

R12 is like $700 for a virgin 30lb if you can find it from a reputable source (very hard to do)
not sure what happened to the 2 small cans we had at the shop when we got booted out.
