I think it's not really good to push the envelope.

I have had the gas light turn on before and it only filled to around 15 or so gallons. We are supposed to have an 18.5 gallon tank.

I think every car is going to be different, though.

i've put in as much as 18.2 gallons in one shot.

i've also gotten 496 miles driven (not theoretical maxmium) off a tank.

and yea i've gone 30 miles with the light on before.

No problem. I've probably gone 40-45 miles with the light on before. Was definitely sweating it out towards the end though.

retarded = light turned on even earlier or retarded = light turned on after it was too late?

Those gauges are never that accurate. Constantly fluctuating and such.

lemme explain a little better.... ive had 3 nissans, a 93 sentra se-r, a 92 max gxe, and my 93 max se right now.

the SE-R light NEVER came on, even past E
the GXE light came on BELOW E.
the SE light came on right after the 1/4 mark

the GXE's way is fine.... needle on E means get fuel soon. light on means get fuel NOW.

The "reserve" tank is about 2-3 gals iirc. so depending on how you drive thats about 40-50 miles.

I used to drive my VG below the E line on a reg basis and never ran out of gas... not sure why i did it, just didnt feel like filling up??

did most of my miles last night on highway at approx 50mph the whole way, but as you may kno, i wont kno for sure till i get a new cluster.

it comes on and off every here and then, but the needle right now is creeping below E

i like that way also capedcadaver.
and to the people who's gas light does work.
you better get gas when the light does'nt come back on and you've been driving below E for the longest.

thats what happened on my se.
the light was on then just went out then about 10miles down the road she started sputtering...

40-50 miles sounds about right i once drove about and hour and a half with the light on i forgot my wallet at home so i was basically praying the entire way but intereting fact the A/T gives better mileage on power i drove for about 10 min with light on switched it to power and the light went off

putting it power shouldn't affect whether or not the light goes off.... it's not like you're refilling the tank just by putting it in Power. i think it was just coincidence. power has been said to be easier on the tranny tho.

I've tested this out a few times just because I never really felt like stopping for gas after work, and couldn't ever bring myself to get up earlier to get it on the way to work. It's been varied for me and I'm starting to push it further and further into the "light on zone" but what follows is the weirdest thing I've ever had happen.

Usually when the light came on I'd fill up and it would be 14-15 gallons. This time I was pushing it, the gas light came on...then went off and did not come back on...I stopped on the way back from work that day to get gas just because I had driven ~30 miles and the light still didn't come back on (was on E the entire time)...she filled up for 17.9 gallons. It was my understanding that we have an 18.5 gallon tank so I guess I cut it a bit close!

It's almost like she was saying "Fine. Don't heed the warnings I'm giving you. We'll see who's laughing when you're stuck on the side of the beltway with no gas."
