Strange Drivetrain Sounds
Strange Drivetrain Sounds
I recently replaced all the struts, as soon as I was finished I took it for a drive and when I got on it it started making what sounded like a tire rubbing on something sound but after I pulled over to check it out it was gone. It didn't come back for about a week and now as soon as I get over or around 35mph it starts making the sound and then goes away as soon as the car is almost at a dead stop. I pulled the wheels off today and ran it in gear while on jack stands and it's doing it without the wheels on. It isn't engine related because it will only do it when the drive train is moving. The noise seems to be coming from right where the driver's side cv axle is going in to the transmission. I also notice that two of the bolts for the mount is missing as well but there is nothing touching any of the moving parts. I'm wondering if this could be the cv shaft although I've never in my experiance heard a cv shaft make a noise quite like this. The transmission has been rebuilt in the past and it is still shifting normally. Has anyone else ever run across this problem before? I also thought maybe the carrier bearing but it doesn't seem to be coming from there. There was also a knocking kind of sound coming from the cv area as well. Any advice or help would be awesome. Here's a video of the sound. Thanks.

Well I located the trouble. On the outside part of the cv there's a ring that presses against the bearing. That ring is supposed to be fixed to the cv and it came loose causing the cv spin around in side of it. I never would have figured that. Even better I bought the cv from autozone about a year ago lifetime warranty and all and for some reason they don't have my warranty for it on file anymore. So looks like I'll be spending $114 on a new one just because that ring came loose. That's life I guess?
