-take it out, put a napkin under it, spray it about 20 times, let it dry, reinstall, and 'ello mpg's.

20 times??

Just remove the maf from the car, set it on the ground, spray the little "light bulb filament" looking thing in the middle of the maf housing with the spray for about 5-10 seconds, reinstall, done

MAF cleaner is the exact same as CRC's electrical contact cleaner btw. Only you can get the electrical contact from Home Depot for like $2 cheaper.

What is the MAF made from? It's a small thermistor mounted on the end of a shaft holding it in place in the middle of a plastic tube. It's a simple electrical component used in all kinds of parts- automotive and other- for the last 30 years. Cleaning it with electrical parts cleaner will not hurt it at all.

I was asking to know if he had seen the chemical formula or something.

Yeah, there's always that one Hydrogen Atom that separates water from heavy water and then BOOM.

So a themistor... really? That's all?

Nope, haven't checked out the chemical formula, but was told by more than one mechanic that it's the exact same thing renamed to jack up the price. Before I asked anyone, there was a tutorial over on FordF150.net on how to clean an MAF that he specified to use electrical contact cleaner, always used it on all my vehicles and never had a problem.

yup...
the electronics inside the maf simply feed a current through the thing and cause it to maintain a constant temperature. the amount of current required to do that is directly related to the amount of air flowing across it (thus cooling it)...

so the MAF measures the current and translates that to an airflow number based on the air temperature/density, and calibrated to the size of the MAF housing.

pretty simple trick actually. been used for years in many industries to measure flow of any fluid that's non-conductive.
