perhaps.

try grounding the solenoids to see if that shuts it up

also is there any correlation between the mileage on your oil and the clacking? what oil/filter do you use?

Or it could be the exhaust manifold studs, my gxe I had before my se had a really loud clacking because of it.

hmm good point. but with your studs, they got louder the harder you push the gas, right? whereas VTCs are always (?) the same volume? I guess that can help him narrow it down if it's a rear stud that he can't see. should be able to see all the front ones with his eyes and a hand-held mirror.

also, what would make a tinny grinding noise only when accelerating in the suspension area?

Vtc clack tends to die out with engine rpm increase, so yeah you probably have the vtc clackorama going on

have you tried grounding the vtc's out?

not yet. getting late on the oil change (need to do that soon) I don't mind it much but could it lead to worsen if I keep it ungrounded?

If you have bypassed couple of oil changes, valve lifters can start complaining.

Yes, it will get louder and stay around longer if they are not either grounded or rebuilt.
