auto tranny problems

i have a 92 gxe with about 110k miles on it and just recently it started not shifting into drive right away, when i put it in gear it will just sit there and sometimes up to about 10 or so seconds later it will finally shift into gear so i can go. also when i try to start it sometimes it wont do anything, almost like its not in park but it is, so ive been having to start it in neutral every now and then. i had the tranny fluid changed and i guess the tranny filter is unable to be changed so thats still the original. any ideas why it's doing this or how to fix it ??

I am having this problem a little on my Auto Maxima. When you put it in D and it still doesn't go right away...try jiggling the shifter. If it goes into gear as soon as you jiggle it, the problem might be your shift selector linkage bushing.

Once, I put the selector in Park and left. When I came back, the car wouldn't start. I found out, it technically wasn't in Park (it just looked that way). I move it around a little and put it back into Park, and the car cranks right up. I think my bushing needs replaced too. I think it's pretty cheap to replace yourself. I don't think it's something major.

Also, my car won't start in Neutral, only in Park. Safety reasons, I guess.

I once had a 3rd gen. It was an 89 SE Auto, slowest 3rd gen avalible. It did sort of the same thing you describes. When I would shift to drive, if I did it gently I could get it to stay in neutral while the shifter was in D. It would go to Drive once I grabbed the shifter and pulled back (theres a little movement in the shifter) It would seem the sensor or switch was near the back of the selected position. It did the same in 2, R and N.

might need to have the 2 shifter bushings replaced..one is on the tranny and the other is on the actual shifter mechanism, but I'm not too sure exactly where.

You guys are on the right track. There are several pivot points along the shift linkage path. Each one is prone to wear and creating slop. After they are worn, you can adjust the linkage so that going into drive is perfect, but then selecting reverse is not right on, and vice versa. Best to remove the slop in the pivot points via new bushings etc.
