installing keypads?
installing keypads?
Hey guys,
I did a search and couldnt find anything.
Has anyone installed keypads from GXE into a non-GXE model?
Anywhere I can find wiring diagrams? I beleive it is wired to the ECU?
If the ECU on my standard model wont support the feature, is there a way to wire the thing to the immobalizer, so that its code triggers the alarm, central locking and power windows (dont really care about the windows, but it would be nice).
Any help would be much appreciated.

no one in the USA has done it to my knowledge. In some ways it is easier to swap over a motor than install the keypads. Getting an FSM would be a good place to start though with the immobilizer you will be wired a bit differently.
Do you know if the ECU's are different? or the same unit with a different tune / programming?
as far as I can tell, looking at the fsm, the digital touch entry is not tied to the ecu, for main functions.
part of the reason most people dont do a keypad swap is because it is cheaper and easier to install a remote keyless entry/start system; $150(US) gets you an installed system in under an hour (typically) vs. sourcing parts, testing (presuming used) and replacing bad parts, disconnecting everything and removing the entire dash, laying out the new dash harness, testing, fixing what you forgot to connect, finding out why it isnt working, even though it is all connected, finally getting it all to work, replacing the dash, looking at the pile of left over nuts/bolts/screws and wondering which ones were important enough to tear it all back out again....
and the required cussing/screaming and downtime (at least an entire day, if you are fast).

you would need a lot of wiring, an FSM, a good brain, the keypads, the control box, and a lot of free time. but it can definitely be done. I was originally going to do it on my friend's 89SE but other things came up. It might still happen though, in which case i'll provide info and pics.

the SE and GXE dash/body wiring harnesses are different. Much of the difference is for the keypad and associated electronics. The keyless entry system ties into the windows, sunroof, locks, and trunk. Obviously it goes to many different places. The door switches and latches themselves are the same, but the main body harness that connects them all is different.
Thus, it would be extremely difficult to swap the whole system over. IMO, you'd be better off buying a GXE if you want the keyless that bad.
The easier thing to do would be to buy a $100 aftermarket keyless entry system and call it a day.

I'm pulling my doors apart to fix the central locking (the master lock sometimes gets stuck on something) and installing an alarm, so I'd might as well put in the extra effort eh?
I finally got a chance to have a look through my workshop manual and found a 2 page detailed wiring diagram, it looks pretty simple and easy to do, but easier said than done. I'll try and take some pics of the process as I do it if you guys wanna see the start and end results.
Well I've already got keyless entry, I just like the idea of keypads

i'm not sure if or when i'll do the swap. i'm not on good terms with matt right now so until then, it isn't happening. unless someone else on the forum wants me to do it to their SE. bit i will have to do some research first. my car's a gxe so i already have them
