GXE Trans Failure! ideas as to why?

This morning at about 8:30 on my way to work down a major highway i heard a loud grinding sound coming from my car (lasted about 5 seconds), and then a even louder bang. at this point i lost overdrive and thought the car when into default (safe) mode. i pulled off the side of the road to inspect the damage. there where no visable signs of leakage and i saw no obvious problems. i pulled back on to the highway and the car still seamed to move fine, no slipping but still no over drive. at work 15 minutes later i ran the tran diagnostic to find that there are no problems. desiding to move my car i realised i no longer have reverse.

but this is where it gets strange. after i got my brothers trailer to my job my father and i tried to push the car out of the space in neutral, the car would not move at all pushing it in reverse (also tried it in drive). when trying to move the car with the engine in reverse we found that the car lerchs farward breaf ly when put in Reverse (it feels and sounds like the car is trying to use reverse but it like try to move the car with your foot on the brake). after putting wheel dollies under the front and pushing it out we eventualy got it on the trailer.

this doesnt seem like the average GXE trans failure i have read about and come across my self. this trany is a rebuild and has 25k on it.

i am confused at to what the problem but im thinking it is a bearing issue in the diff.

now i want opinons as to what the failure is or could be. i dont want the same old GXE Tranys are garbage, just put a manual in get a new maxima.

if anyone else has had this problem i love to hear from you!

thank you all for your help

my cousin had a problem like this after a rebuild, after complaining and *****ing and maybe even some threatening of the shop that rebuilt it, they rebuilt it again for him, im not sure how many miles his lasted for but 25k is a sign of a pretty ****ty rebuild if u ask me, unless u were abusing it

ya sounds like something wasnt done right, i mean there weak trannys but even the weakest im sure will last 75k or more, only way to know for sure is to tear it down, was it a shop that did the rebuild?

also i know u didnt want to hear it but a 5spd would be worth ur money this time if u plan on keeping the car, or a auto out of a maxima se with the lsd, i think those are much better than the gxe's as well

ouch, i think a used 5spd or se auto with lsd is what u want now, i would think this failure is the internals and not worth the money in the rebuild unless u get it built up and thats serious money, a used 5spd probably wouldnt be to much to buy and get installed compared to other options

you can't just put in the LSD auto tranny. you have to get the flexplate from a quest.. THEN you have to make sure the TCU from the VE will even work with a VG ECU.. plus it's gonna shift at the wrong points (VE revs higher than VG... so at WOT you're just gonna bounce off the rev limiter)... so if you can figure all that out, then it could work. you'd also need the hubs and axles from that car.

Your reverse problem sounds like what led to my first rebuild, although I have a VG trans for my 91 SE. Except I didn't have any warning. It would back out of my space at my job. So we tow it out (Ouch, and a no-no on a FWD). I tried to drive it home. Got about 2 miles and then I could drive past 5mph. All I can say, from a newb point of view: "When the VG trans fails, build, rebuild again." I'll look at my records to find out what parts needed a rebuild.

That's good to know Caped. That could be a disaster after all that work.

I thought you can't use an auto from a VE on a VG engine because the starter is mounted in the wrong place and can't be relocated.

i have the same problem as you do but the only diffrence is i did not hear no loud grinding sounds,

i was just going down the road then it just stopped,

then tried again 20 mins later i let the engine chill for a while then it went 2 blocks,

killed it waited for a friend to tow me he got there about 30 mins later,

he tried,

he got 10 feet out of it then that was it nvr moved sentce,

but i did hear tht it might be a filter "might not be your problem but you could never know" but yeah i started it the other day and went into reverse it moved like an inch but after it slipped out

if you or anyone who may read this knows or may have an idea anything will help me out

thank you c:

first i want to start by saying thank you for post jacking. is you car an SE GXE, standard or automatic?

after tooling around today i found that both front wheels will not move in neutral at all. they are completely locked like the car is in park. it will move forward in drive but there in no reverse (even when being pushed). one i get my stuff together and when it get warmer out i wil rip the tranny out and tare it up. first with tools. it the diff blew or some bearing i will finish it off old school (20lb sledge). and move on. i may have a used auto to put in it for temporary but im looking at a 92 se 5-spd.

it definitely sounds like a blown diff

as far as the above mentioned option of using the VE A/T on a GXE, it has not successfully been done yet.
