syncro wear on VG 5SPD?
syncro wear on VG 5SPD?
i just picked up my 91 VG 5spd wednesday night and i noticed driving it from the dealer that the shifting was kinda notchy, then thursday night i went to my girlfriends job and it was getting worse,on my way home,it got so bad that i basicly had no clutch at all,it was stuck to the floor,no pressure whatsoever, and just trying to shift gears,i was grinding the **** out of the gears, these were loud scary death grinds, but i just needed to get the car home, and this morning i seen the slave cylinder was leaking..so went to buy wise and got a remanuf. for $20 and replaced it,but the grinding didnt come to a complete stop..when i try to chirp 2nd or just shift into 2nd at high RPMs,it grinds, suggesting syncro wear, and the clutch picks up very low,and chatters or shakes very easily, and sometimes hard to get into first at like a light or dead stop...did i perhaps tear the syncros up or maybe not bled the clutch right?
1. I'm guessing you bled the system completely and correctly after you installed the slave cylinder.
2. how's the master cylinder look? I had to rebuild mine a while back. a rebuild kit from nissan is about $15 and takes 20-30 minutes aside from bleeding the system. (not easy once the master cyl is empty)
3. check the pedal height adjustment screw on the pedal itself. you may be able to adjust the pedal so the clutch will engage sooner.
I tried to adjust mine on my stock clutch, but it didn't work.. I replaced it a couple weeks later with an ACT clutch and the probelm went away after I reset all the adjustments.
If I were you, I'd start saving for a new clutch, but also be prepared for a tranny rebuild too. (new clutch = $200-400.. tranny rebuild = $500-1000)

Hey matt does sure are some hopeful prices! Every time someone wants to rebuild one here we charge any where from $700 - $1500. If you have ever rebuilt one of these things it aint no picnic!!
I spent 8 days rebuilding mine and putting in 87 300 zx 1st and 2nd gear. ram clutch and lightened flywheel. If my shop was doing the work for some one cost is about $3400.00. Due to my tranny was not rebuildable since it was cracked! Best solution buy a tranny from Advance auto rebuilt for $1200.00 and put in a new clutch and resurface your flywheel. Cost- $1700-$2000.

Actually those are ranges just outside of what I paid for my stuff RETAIL.
I bought an ACT clutch for $310, shipped...
I bought second stock flywheel, and took it to a machine shop for resurfacing and lightening.. I had them take off 3 lb from the outer ring.
While I had the tranny out for the clutch replacement, I discovered the weird noises I heard were from the bearings in the tranny rolling around like marbles.. so in for a rebuild it went! it was a stock rebuild, but the shop builds racing trannies and said the box is well capable of 300 hp without any other adjustments (just keep a good clutch and fluid in it!)
Sooo, there was no point in adding to the cost of the rebuild..
Labor for the rebuild was $300. Parts were $550 for the bearing/synchro kit. so the total cost for ACT clutch, ligthened flywheel, and good tranny rebuild was just a tad over $1000.

Are you comfortable w/your lightened flywheel. Shaving weight off a fly wheel is just like cutting your springs . Once you do it it wheel not have the same strength density as it did when it was stock. I recently cut my front springs on my max and am not very happy with all the sway I have up front from take off! Even though we have done plenty of spring cuts I have never tackled a Maxima spring and they are 3 times thicker than other manufacture springs. I hope you the best on ur flywheel and pray it doesn't shatter!

MAdMax, I can't tell you where I got that price.. It might cost the guy his job if anyone else tried to get it that cheap.

But I DO kow courtesy has them for not much more.. probably $340 is about right. give them a call, or check out the webpage.
