Is it worth the cost to put an manual transmision in?

Okay, right now I've got a 91 GXE. I hate that auto transmision. Hate it! I want something I can do myself. I'm gonna get a new car sometime by the end of the summer (either a 3rd or 4th gen) and I've been looking at how much I should expect to spend. The thing is, I've found that it's much cheaper to buy an auto max than it is to buy a 5spd. Now, my question is:

Should I just get an auto and then just have a manual transmision thrown in? Is it even worth it?

Damn mechanical inclination! If only I were, I could do the swap for more than 1/2 off! Unfortunately the CAI installation I did was the limit of my mechanical ability!
