Oil Filter/Type Questions....

I just recently purchased a 93 Maxima SE 5spd, and am extremely excited about the car. I have heard various things regarding the type of oil and kind of oil filter to put in the car. Some have told me to only use synth. oil, is that correct? What is the correct, or best oil/filter to use?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Oil Filter/Type Questions....

Well first off, you have a very nice car. Welcome to the forum. At the top of all the threads are "Important" threads. Go through all these and they will answering most of your questions.

As for the oil and filter, I use a Syntec Blend. Synthetic is always good for your car and many people highly recommend it. As for the filter, I ONLY use the OEM Nissan oil filter for the VE30DE engine. That is the engine you have in your car. With the research I have done, I have found out that the other filters out there don't measure up to the OEM filters.

Read over the FAQ's on Maxima.org. Also, there is a "search" function. You can search for anything, and you find out that it will be your best friend. Try that before posting a question. Hope this helps.

Some Chrysler page (arrgh! lost link - again!) did a study of cutting up oil filters and found the Purolator Pure One filters had the most filtering area and densest filter of them all. I'm going to see if I can find this for my next oil change. He also said avoid Fram and Fram made filters because their construction was @ss.

For VE engined cars like ours I think Nissan put out a notice to use only 5W30 grade oil in our cars, probably to lubricate those fragile VTCs easier in the morning.

I'm due for an oil change really soon (my 1st), and I'm not sure if I should blend 1qt (or 2?) full synthetic with regular oil (like this guy's page says) or just buy a "synthetic blend". I thought about going the 100% synthetic route, but I figure if I change it every 3000 miles anyway it won't be so bad (besides it's expensive!) Thoughts on this?

Thanks for the help everyone. I had heard from a friend that once you use synthetic oil in a car, you cannot go back to regular oil, is that true? Is there a way to tell if the current oil filter on the car is one that drains properly?

Read the stickies or put "synthetic oil" in the search engine. More info that you could ever want. Just to tease you.
1) Not true
2) Yes.

Hmm, I've changed my mind on this. I think I'll be going the synthetic route afterall, either Mobil 1 or see if anyone sells Amsoil here. Synthetic oil just seems to be better because of their extra protection, quality, durability and extended change intervals....

Now I just have to read (and re-read) some stuff to figure out what I should make those intervals.

don't use fram whatever you do

Don't use a fram filter they are the worst, there made of paper. Also if your car has a lot of miles on it like mine it is said not to use synthetic oil on it I think it is something like 50,000 or more miles. The engine becomes accustomed to regular oil. Go with a Nissan filter. Just some thoughts.
