Power Steering Pump Replacement -- degree of DIY difficulty? Please chime in.
Anyone in here ever replaced their power steering pump on their max? I have an 89 Max with a PS pump that works just fine but makes a terrible noise (rrrrrrreeerrr, in step with the engine revving). ANNOYING as all get out and have been enduring it for the past year or so! I am getting ready to sell the Max pretty soon (tear.tear.sniffle) and would like fix this before selling it. If anyone has the procedure write up with pictures that would be excellent. I have the FSM. Thanks.

Well in a nut shell it's not too bad to do,.. you'll need to remove the right front tire (Passenger side
).. and probably the inner fender skirt/shroud type plastic splash guard..
There are 4 bolts that hold on the pump (Of course you'll have to remove the belt first
) .. there are three bolts on the front that can be acessed through the pump pully holes, and one on the back that's a bit tougher to get too.. There are two hoses that'll need to be disconnected as well (I'd recommend removing the hoses from top side first, and then from pump housing after you get the pump pulled out of the vehicle ...
that's pretty much it in a "nut shell"

VE and VG pumps are interchangable. The only difference is a slight one between trim models SE and GXE, the SE pump gives a slightly tighter feel.
While your doing it you might want to check the health of your high pressure steering hose, if its not leaking yet, it might be soon. This then leaks on your bushings and you get the picture.

Hey, new here.
My PS Pump went and I'm trying to see if its the one that has electronic control or not. My VIN showed it could be either or. Is there any other really good way of telling whether the pump has EC or not? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure if it's the electronic one, look at your existing pump, and check if there is an electronic harness connector coming out of it. If there isn't one, then you have the regular (manual) one. Either way, you should be able to install the manual one in place of it.
