OXYGEN SENSOR????

I have never replaced my O2 sensor, and rarely hear anyone talking about it on the 89-94 maxima. WHen is a good time to replace it, or would the computer throw a code if something is wrong with it. What would the symptoms of a bad o2 sensor consist of?? I was just wondering because they are not cheap, and would they really improve your gas mileage??

if the 02 is bad, your mpg will suck. i went from 15 to 23mpg just from fixing my o2 wiring (which had a broken wire)... so you can expect at least a few MPG from replacing a worn-out sensor.

it's pretty easy. just unscrew the old one with a wrench and put the new one in w/ antiseize on the threads.

if your o2 (or wiring) is bad, your ECU will show a code 33.

Im curious how to repair the wire harness(engine harness side) if its been previously cut?

Theres one wire on the o2 sensors that looks like its got a wire wrapped around it, I don't remember what color it is.

the connector was cut and wired directly to the o2 sensor at one time due to corrosion on the wires and inside the connector. I have replaced the connector with a non corroded one, and when I wired it I remember the one wire was insulated like regular wires, but then it had a wire wrapped around that.

what I did was connected the inside wire and removed enough of the outside wire so it wouldnt touch the inside wire and cause a short or something. Is the outside wire suppose to be connected or is it there just to act as a shield from vibrations and what not?

sorry to steal thread, didnt want to start a new one.

chances are that was an RF shield. don't worry too much about it. you can test it and see if the outer wire goes to ground, which I ASSuME it does

320/18= ~17.5gal and we have an 18.5 gal tank....... so if he's REALLY running it down to the dregs i suppose it's possible. heck i got 496 miles on a single tank one time, and then filled it up and still had 2 gallons left in it (31mpg on that tank)

o2 sensors are a regular maintenance replacement item, like plug wires/plugs/fuel filter/etc. About every 100k miles(average) An o2 sensor can get "lazy" so to speak without setting off the cel, when they do this, it will gradually lower your fuel mileage..

Both are good, well respected brands. Pretty much whatever you want.

Careful installing. Make sure your wrench is on fully. They can be wedged pretty tight. If it ends up not wanting to budge, you can cut the wires, and stick a socket on it with a breaker bar. Since you are replacing it, you don't need to worry about the wires coming off the sensor anyway. But, it could go either way. I've had some that pop out with little effort, and some that needed some serious muscle to get off.

Pretty much. Bosch is good company. They make parts for everything. Haha, I have a GM 6.5 Diesel with their injectors, and my Father has a Cummins with their injection pump.

1. the brand is NTK not NGK.
2. NTK is what the car left the factory with and assuming they get you the correct one, the wire length will be correct vs Bosch which last I checked was about 4x too long.
NTK part # is 24064
