How advanced to you all run your timing?..

Hey guys,..

I was just wondering how advanced you guys are running your timing on your engines (?) .. I had mine set to the stock settings,. and it seemed a bit sluggish off the line so I advanced it just a bit (By ear/feel.. ),.. and it seemed a whole lot peppier off the line and through out the rpm range,... I kept advancing it until I started to feel a decrease in performance/power and then backed it off a hair,.. I never did hear any type of pinging or detonation going on which used to be a give away when you were too far advanced back in the day

Thanks,
Rick

I had it set at stock 15 deg BTDC. I advanced it to 17-18 deg BTDC and 20 on occasion, but in the end, I set it back to 15 deg BTDC.

With regular unleaded (87), it still ran fine at 17-18 deg BTDC with a little more pep. With Premium, it ran even better.

However, I think the timing advance is what contributed to the occasional lifter clack at start up - probably overheated the hydraulic lifters - as well as broken exhaust manifold studs as the engine ran that much hotter as a result of producing more power.

About 2 years ago, I set everything back to 15 BTDC and left it.

I'm at 17 degrees with nothing but 93 octane fuel on my 3rd gen and 15 degrees on the 4th gen since thats kind of not an option

I had mine at 20ish for several years. Just recently went back to stock. Realized it was pointless and I was wasting so much money running 93 octane all those years

I used to as well, but I've since systemically stepped down to 87 octane and noticed absolutely no decrease in performance, gas mileage, etc.

It dawned on me recently that there's no way Nissan actually intended to require 93 octane as many parts of the country don't even have 93 octane. So I tried a tank on 89, then now I'm a couple tanks in on trying 87 and have nothing to report but much cheaper fill ups
