1993 gxe intermittent start problem-95% chance problem resolved

First, my thanks for the replies.

I recently visited a Nissan dealership and told them of my intermittent start problem and this is what they suggested and it WORKED!!!! "so far"

Their suggestion was to replace the module, located in the relay panel. I believe he said this controls the spark, gas, etc. The relay is green in color and is the first one in the rely panel, which is located underneath the hood on the drivers side. Sorry, I can not reminder exactly what else it controls.

If I am not mistaken, this is the same as the fuel pump relay.

Anyway, just wanted to share the info.

please keep me updated. i'm having the same problem with my 92 SE. is this relay labled "ign cont." or something of the like?
i'm about to have my fuel pump replaced, and i've already changed my fuel pump relay.
my main problem with diagnosing this problem was whenever i would bring it to the mechanic, it would start perfect every time. i think tomorrow i'll pull that relay completely out and see if the fuel pump runs, if it doesnt then its gotta be that relay (assuming of course it runs BEFORE i pull the relay.)
thanks

Try this as an experiment. Try switching relays. I believe they are the only ones that are green in color and they are interchangeable. Or just purchase another relay. cost: around $17.00.

Something else to keep in mind, you may have a problem with a loose ground.

OH,I was also informed that it is not common for a fuel pump to go bad, but anything is possible.

My car is starting and running great, although I haven't driven it lately due to having to change the rear window regulator. Other then realigning the door panel, not too bad a job.

Let me know what you find.

just out of curiousity, you're talking about the relays under the hood right? well today, i figured that if the relay was out, the pump wouldnt turn on. so i took the green relay out and turned the key to "on" and the pump ran like it should. any ideas? the only way i can get the fuel pump not to run is take the relay out.
again, any ideas?
thanks

I have a 90 GXE that has intermittent start problems also. It also would quit running after starting, intermittently. I thought it was ignition problem but after talking with dealer mech he suggested starting with fuel system by placing a fuel pressure guage in line after fuel filter and waiting until it happened again. Did that today and thankfully it acted up rather quickly, when I checked fuel pressure it was 0. Then tried to troubleshoot that system, because mech said the fuel pumps hardly ever fail. My multimeter was not up to the task and I am also not very good with it. So I replaced the fuel control relay, which on my car is in the trunk near the trunk release. At least that was the only one I found so far. It was green and so far the car acts normal. I do have one other strange thing that is happening when the hard to start or dying problem happens. My RPM gauge gets very erratic and even when the car is not running (right after dying or trying to start) with the key on, the RPM gauge jumps between 0 and 1000 RPM. Anyone else see this happen on their car?
