Flat Tappet Cam

LVR, is the VG30E a flat tappet type camshaft? Wondering what the break-in procedure is if I replace the RH one. I have Lubriplate No. 105 Motor Assembly Grease, but someone told me it has to be a moly based for the flat tappet type.

The VG certainly is not a roller type cam follower design, so yes its a "flat tappet design" (although that is a misnomer as the actual "tappet" surface is slightly "crowned" in reality).

Break-in? ............ moly based grease to be used only when you are circulating liters of oil past those spots where you applied the moly grease? ............. imo its crap. Fill the lifters properly during assembly and lubricate the rest of the assembled top liberally with normal engine oil - thats all that is required imo. Start the motor and keep an eye on oil pressure and temp for the first few hours ............... don't know what needs to be "run-in" in the valve train myself - its basically stuff opening and closing on demand with the lifters taking care of any "lash" - sorry.

i have used cam/bearing lub so that the lifters dont run dry during first start on tappets. i have done this with a flat head v8, 351 roller tappet, 302 roller tappet, and my vg30et engine. assembly lub should be fine. are you doing a full rebuild 1993 or are just rebuilding the top end?

I'm doing the full overhaul, (top & bottom). I'll use the Lubriplate but just a small amount. I think people ran into problems when they used gobs of this stuff. I've read that the clumps can be found in the filter.

300z do you have any source to get the lifters at a decent price. These things seem like a rip - they are 20.00 bucks a pop in Canada, and i'll have to replace the entire side if replacing 1 camshaft right?
