is my trans slipping?

Ive had my 92 GXE on power mode for a while. If i hit the brakes and slow down, then hit the gas again (like braking for a turning car ahead), sometimes it will "pull", like a gear change when you go up a steep hill. Also, today after i stopped my foot slipped and i punched the gas a bit hard, there was a small delay then the car went, with the "over a bump" feeling

Ive never done anything overly aggressive on the car and no hard accelerations/neutral drops, but then again its got over 400km on it. Are both of these symptoms of a slipping transmission or just because its in power mode? These things never happened when it was in normal mode, and the "over a bump" delay has happened maybe 2-3 times ever, and its because i accidentally hit the gas suddenly hard

it might be slipping some. tho keep in mind, the torque convrter, by design, slips a little bit (which is why your rpm off-throttle is lower than your rpm on-throttle, even at the same speed in the same gear). if it gets any worse with time, you will know for sure that it's slipping. My grandpa's oldsmobile slips violently, due to a really bad leak. A bad slip will look sortof like a 16 year old learning how to drive a stick-shift that revs the **** out of the engine between each shift cuz of letting off the clutch too slow... except it's an automatic so it does it all by itself. Slips usually start off subtle and infrequent, and get worse over the course of a month or three.

interesting. Like i said, the lag has always been when my foot slips or gets antsy and i punch the gas too hard. otherwise, it shifts like new.

Anything i should do/worry about unless it gets worse? The pull has been happening for pretty much a year now and its never become more frequent/worse, it often happens when ive got someone in a Civic ahead of me doing a semi turn and a Skyline up my **** going 80 and i have to giv'er a bit to speed up again

sometimes a bad motor mount makes people think the trans is slipping then catching due to the abrupt pop it causes.

hmm, i'll have to check out that too

So if things dont get noticeably worse within a few months, it shouldnt be my trans?

welll you can never TRULY rule out the VG auto tranny... it's gained a reuptation for being a ticking time-bomb, so to speak. Mine quit with no warning whatsoever, lost all 4 gears and reverse, and made a funny noise when i revved it. Others, like Greeny's GXE, slip from time to time, and get slowly worse over time.

Also you might want to check your trans fluid for color and maybe smell (some say that you can smell 'burnt' fluid )

i'll give that a smell tomorrow

i of course googled before i posted, and there was someone else with a different car doing the same thing and high mileage. One person said to do a trans fluid flush and a few other people said on high mileage cars, a flush will just make things worse

is that BS or should i get my trans fluid flushed?

Burned transmission fluid contains worn out clutch material and small metal particles from other parts getting worn out. When you take out the old transmission fluid in that condition and put in new fluid it will remove more of the clutch material from the cluthes and make slipping worse. So the time to get the transmission rebuilt/replaced will happen much sooner than leaving the old fluid and the flush would be a waste of money.

flushing may be bad, but frequent drain & refills are good to keep the fluid fresh, right?

Well when my dad drains the fluid and notices a lot of metal and other dirt on the pan, it's not worth doing the service. Otherwise it's a good thing.

drain and refills works for me.
i do the drain and refill 3x's.
drain and refill then drive for about 30minutes or so. and i repeat.

i had a friend of mine test drive my car becuase my 1st-2nd shift was iffy.
he tells me to start looking for a new tranny.
but the thing is...it's been doing it for about a year and 1/2.

the vg tranny is only a ticking time bomb if you don't change the fluids like you should.
oh yea and get and external tranny cooler...it
helps.

Are you measuring the tranny fluid level when the engine is hot and running . the dip stick should be hot to the touch. You should also shift through all the gears before checking.

Even if the fluid was really off, I would try a drain and fill anyways.

cheap shops do trans for $1k installed. lasts 30 days, then they warranty it but take 3 weeks to do the work.
some shops charge 4k but it works for 3 years without the warranty headaches.

I know you asked for a rebuild... but here's some info on a "reconditioned"

When my transmission went out, I got a "reconditioned" transmission for about $750 and a 6month guarantee. Yeah! 6months!!!
I had it installed by a shop for about $650.
So altogether I spent $1400 for a transmission...

From what I understood, reconditioned means that they merely cleaned the transmission and did some really super minor inspection/testing, if any at all. Basically, the company I got the trasmission from (ATTARCO), and they get their transmissions from Japan.
The explantion I got from one of their service guys was:
Japan's emissions regulations are way more strict than here in U.S. So, when the Maxima is decomissioned based on emissions, we buy their parts and re-sell them here.
Also, the service guy mentioned that Japanese cars "usually" carry low mileage on them, since many drivers don't drive as often as they take public transportation.

Now, I don't know how much of what the service guy said is true, but, I thought I was getting out of an expensive bill by getting a used transmission.

Of course, ATTARCO is in CA so the shipping is what will hurt ya. But, something to consider (ie. looking into used-transmissions).

Good luck!

Well... guys I got another question I took her out for a ride yesterday and i know for a fact that im loosing power from my studs being gone i think two of them are gone where can i get some to replace them? can i just get some hex bolts? but back to the TRANNY SUBJECT when ur tranny fluid heats up isnt it suppose to be at the hot mark on the dip stick? i checked it yesterday when i stopped it hits all the gears but it just doesnt pull much in first. could this be because its not enough tranny fluid?

I had two guys tell me to replace the strainer? i dont know what that is...

It's the filter. It won't be easy to replace because it requires opening the transmission

Okay so this could be caused by the fliter being dirty?

dont know, but I experienced a similar problem. I noticed one day that my transmission started to slip a little, then it seemed like the car was loosing power and stuff, I would floor it, and it would not take off like it used to do! Then there was this straining noise coming from the transmission. I checked the fluid level and it was turning a little darker than normal. It eventually went out with little to no warning almost leaving me stranded in the middle of nowhere on a cold night about 30 miles from home. Its a good idea to change the fluid regularly as I neglected to do to mine for 50,000 miles. I will be replacing the transmission in my car as it has been very reliable for the 50,000 miles of my ownership even with 225,000 miles still a great car! After I get the tranny installed, I will install an external transmission cooler to help prolong the life of it.

Just got mine back from being rebuilt/overhauled.
The total was $1808.37
He showed me all the burnt parts.
The shop said it wasnt in bad shape for 341k miles.
He even gave me a 50k warranty.
The shift points seem to be really pronounced now.
I hope this lasts for a long time

I experienced a somewhat similar problem. My trans is not shifting from 1 to 2 unless i let off the pedal a bit, I did a lot of reading. even tested the tps witch was at 1.5 closed and went to open when throddleing. I replaced it and adjusted it and still have the same issue. its a 1992 auto se 6cyl 103K miles. Looks like I may need to get another tranny, Any Ideas???
