Power Steering Leak pinpoint??

I know that I have a power sterring leak, but I cant really pinpoint exactly where its comming from, it has leaked all over my new control arm to the point that the bushings are completely shot. Its gotten so bad, that when ever I turn the steering wheel to the left or go over a bump I can hear it either move or make some type of noise. I was thinking about replacing both the power steering return hose and the pressure hose. Where ever its leaking from its coming from the bottom somewhere, because there are no leaking spots on the top. 93 gxe 222,000miles

Hey there... I remember way back when I was a little Maxima-baby (knowledge wise). My high pressure power steering hose developed a crack in it, which seeped ATF all over the place (BTW, make sure to use ATF, not power steering fluid!!! something to do with PS fluid being a little more corrosive on the PS system??? confirmation?).

Here's a thread that brings back memories: http://forums.maxima.org/3rd-generat...sure-hose.html (for me of course).
Read this: http://forums.maxima.org/3rd-generat...ose-wrong.html for a discussion on getting the right hose

check the hose (trace it from PS pump/canister) and check if there is any fluid there. Also check the rubber hoses that feed to and from the canister, those may have been dried out and cracked...

Another way you might be able to figure out where your leak is coming from, is to lift your front end and place them on jackstands (both sides on level ground!!!) and turn the steering wheel to actuate the PS system. When the PS system is working, it may build up enough pressure to show you where the leak is in the engine bay. You most likely will need 2nd pair of hands to help you turn the steering wheel while one of you watch for the leak.

Good luck!!!

BTW, can ATF damage bushings? Someone please confirm?
If I were to guess, I'd say no, since bushings are openly exposed to dirt, mud, grime, grease, water, etc. Thus if they were susceptible to degradation, then they should be covered/protected better? Of course, I know ATF is different from grease and motor oil, but I'm just thinkin' aloud :P

Here's some references:
Courtesy Parts microfiche (proper use of word?)
The part I replaced is Part# 49720 - High Pressure Power Steering Hose
Make sure you buy the right one (assuming it might be the hose leaking), as discussed in the thread linked above.

Good luck x2
PS - sorry for seeming to sound like I'm convinced it's your hose... it's just that your post reminded me of some of the struggle I had to replace the hose, that I wanted to give it it's deserved light :P

ATF will damage them as will any other petroleum based fluid.
