Thoughts on buying another VE 5spd?

Im searching for another car for a daily driver until my maxima is done, and i came across this white 92 SE 5speed with 73k miles on it for sale near me. So naturally i go check it out and i find it has the exact same problem mine has - a misfire on cyl #1! While there, me and the owner swapped the coils around and the misfire still remained at cyl #1, and it wasnt intermittent, it was a steady put-put-put out the exhaust

Maybe this is an odd coincidence, but anyone else have a similar misfire issue? He said he changed the plugs or at least checked them and they appeared fine, im thinking an injector? I still dont know the reason for the misfire on MY car so for all i know on this car it could be an injector or something else. Its the "something else" that scares me and makes me not want to wind up in another Maxima project when i have my own

All else was ok, no rust anywhere on the body or wheel wells or fuel/brake lines (at least not major)... but it does have an 89/91 grille, GXE trunk, steelie rims, paint is a little hazy in spots, fair condition leather with a few tears on the driver seat. Had the VTC tick but went away after awhile. Clutch felt ok (not great but ok), the brakes you had to mash the pedal to the floor to get it to stop, owner claims it needs to be bled. Basically its not a rat but far from a gem, it would need a moderate level of TLC to get it immaculate - in which i would not mind doing but that misfire issue is the killer here, ill do an injector replace but not another motor swap

this is a tough one..

Yeah, I mean if the spark plug is good, the coil pack is good, then it has to be an injector problem. BTW - which cylinder is #1?

Is the price good? Aside from a goofy compression issue or something in that cylinder then I say go for it. Of course, this is coming from the guy with three VE 5 speeds

For what it's worth my original black VE has a misfire and super low compression in the middle cylinder on the bank by the firewall. All the injectors test out okay and I've swapped in several other coil packs. Oddly enough, aside from the slight putter at idle, the thing pulls like no other and still put down 180whp and 185tq

My "new" black VE has a misfire as well. I've changed the coil packs but I have a feeling one or more of the rear injectors are bad. I haven't tested them yet though. Now, as far as power there is a marked difference between this one and my other one which still pulls hard. This thing REALLY feels like it's running on 3 cylinders or something

blazer is going to my father to use, and camaro is not poor weather friendly really (i COULD drive it, it is streetable but with the $ i put into paint, the bare alum wheels and underhood parts, summer tires and leaky ttop seal in heavy rain and whatnot, i keep it garaged)

he said hed sell the car to me for $2600, originally asking up to 3

if i dont get this car its no sweat really since ill go for something else under $3k, ive been plowing craigslist daily.... it would be nice though if i could get the VE of course

I am thinking along the same lines as James.

If it's not a compression issue, there are only a couple of things that might cause that.

If the price is right, you can roll it around for a while, clean it up here and there, then sell it for probably close to what you paid for it. At least it would be in good hands and potentially you could sell it to someone on this board that really wants to do a swap or whatever it takes to make the car great. It's getting tougher to find VE 5-speeds.

this is true and to be honest, part of the urge to buy it was for the maxima community's sake Being in the hands of an enthusiast, i could 'rescue' a low mile VE 5speed

The seller said he had his mechanic check it out and found the problem to definitely be a coil, but i swear if i remember correctly that by unplugging the coils one by one after swapping #1 coil with #3, the problem was still at #1 cylinder

i told him to go about it and keep it up for sale to anyone else, and that id contact him if i changed my mind, he did seem set on $2500/2600 though

I want a clean mint VE-5 but its tough to actually find one in Chicago that is in good shape...and when you do find one, it catches you when you're broke!

I don't know why, but I didn't see the price. That does seem pretty steep. I see running, driving, rust free VE 5-speeds on CL for $1k-$2k maybe 2-3 times a month.

I see decent ones here and there on the Portland CL. Seattle seems to have even more of them in good shape for cheap.

wow thats a nice one and for the price too... majority of the ones here in the northeast or at least in the NYC/long island area are high mileage GXEs and you get the occasional VE but they arent in great shape

i just looked at another one, its a black VE 5sp and is in good condition, both appearance and running wise... dont want to post the exact price now but ill just say low to mid $2000's

runs good gets over 30mpg and does fairly decent in the snow. If your just looking for something to get you buy in the meantime.
