Is there a strtup proceedure with new VTC/Chains/Tensioners?
I just replaced VTCs, chains and three tensioners. Is there something special I need to do when I get around to firing it up the first time? (have other things to do first) Will the tensioners pump right up when the oil pressure comes up or do I need to stay with it?
I ask because I've heard about someone firing up a VQ and having to hold RPMs at 2000 until the noises go away, or about chains whiplashing the first time after revving, etc. Stuff like that.
Or, is it just start it and have a nice day?

I would pull the plugs (be sure to cover holes with a rag so you don't suck anything into the cylinder) and turn over by hand till oil is circulated though out the engine so that the tensioners are primed, I have read of the timing chain jumping due to the tensioners being loose.

You don't have to prime the engine, but I would recommend unplugging the power transistor unit and then crank it for about 30 seconds. Then you can start it, but just don't shut it off immediately even if it sounds really bad.

wouldn't you maybe want to unplug the injectors too? so that you don't flood the cylinders with gas while cranking it

On my JDM (it has new VTC's) I just recently started up I pulled the plugs and cranked it over by hand 5 or 6 times first. When I started it up, the thing sounded TERRIBLE. It had me quite scared to be honest. I've started some VE's up before that sounded awful for about 5-10 seconds before quieting down, but this sucker sounded like the heads/VTC's were going to explode for about 5 full minutes. It finally quieted down and hasn't made a peep since.

I didn't do anything special after I rebuilt my VTCs. I only pulled the upper tentioners, but before starting it, I left the CPS unplugged while I cranked it over a few time with the starter. This seems to control the fuel pump and would keep fuel from being spit into the cylinders and of course there would be no spark as well.

Every time that I replaced the tensioners and vtc's in a ve, I just fire it and I haven't had any problems.
