Engine code 35 for 93 maxima

My check engine light came on today and I am getting a code 35 - Exhaust gas temperature sensor (California models). Can someone please tell me where this sensor is located? Thanks

If you have a 94 FSM, it's on pg "EF & EC-5"
http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/1994/
(ec.pdf from that site)

IF you have a cali spec ECU and a non-cali engine, then you could get it.... but otherwise I don't know.
Sure it's not a code 53? (just throwing bones...)

Well, the red light blinks 3 times, and the green light blinks 5 times. I bought this car a few months ago, and the engine light has been on since then. I looked and don't have a Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor. I wonder if the ECU has been replaced?

on the VIN plate under the hood, there should be a model info number that has the format "x L J 3 0 x x E x" which you can decode on page GI-15 here http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/1994/gi.pdf

that will tell you what engine/ecu combo your car SHOULD have.

What does the light on the dash do when you put the ECU in diagnostic mode?

Ok, well my car is a non-cali GXE. The light on the dash flashes one time then flashes 3 times. I'm not sure if it flashes once then 3 times or vice versa. Any ideas????

Where is the long pause? it will be either:
flash........flash..flash..flash.................. ...........................repeat
or
flash..flash..flash..........flash................ ...........................repeat

flash........flash..flash..flash. That would be the coolant temp sensor, but why am I getting the code 35 from the ECU?

You don't read the red/green ones. I'm not exactly sure what those do. BUt if you put the ECU in diagnostic mode, you'll get the same code from the blinking light on the dash and from the red light blinking on the ECU.

Coolant temp sensor is very important on these engines for maintaining drivability. without it, the engine will run very very rich and possibly stall out from flooding. check/replace the temp sensor and see where you go from there.

IIRC, you were having a problem with it in another thread with the radiator fans always on, or was that someone else?
edit... nvm.. that was someone else.

are YOUR radiator fans always on?

Well, when I was at the pull-a-part, I grabbed a couple of CTS and this one must not be working properly. I will switch it out. So I am supposed to read the blinks from the check engine light itself? I didn't know that. I've been reading the red/green light. Before I changed the CTS my check engine light was still on. Why would I be getting the 35 code????

yeah... read it from the check engine light or from the red light on the ECU when you put it in diag mode. when the engine is just running, I don't know what the blinky lights mean. been a while since I've had to mess with it.

you could still have problems with another sensor somewhere else causing the CEL, but I'm not sure what a code 35 would be doing on your car...

why buy a used and questionable quality part, when you can get a new one for $15?
I could understand a MAF, or such, but cheap sensors... it's like getting used t-belts; not something you really ought to do.

Matt, remember tho that on VG's 5-mode ECU you DO use the red and green lights together

(this shows a 55)

when the car is running and you are not touching the screw, the green light indicates o2 sensor polling.
