The subject says it all. I was going to replace it the next day, and I wasn't past 60,000 on the one that broke. I was on my way for Savannah GA to Springfield IL on leave. About 350 miles into the trip it broke. After a 2 night hotel stay and towing my car back I was a little over $600. The only good thing is, it was a lot easier for me to explain ( To my Wife) why this would be the perfect time to do a VG-T engine swap.

Ouch that sucks!!!! Any idea on the internal damage yet?? my boy's Eclipse Sanapped a belt about a month ago...cost him ~$2k for a "new" engine since the insides were screwed, man thats a blower, but tell your wife the VG-t swap will prevent that from happening again in the future!

My mechanic
said the belt in my GXE was nearing the end of its life because he had to adjust the timing alot(or something like that) I was just gonna sell the car and tell the buyer to change it but I think Im gonna have it towed to the mechanic and have it changed now. What does it cost $200-$300?

Yes, that is best thing to do because I throw my timing belt two years ago and it killed the engine. Cost me 2 grand for new/used one and labor fees. It will probably cost a little more than 300 probably closer to $400 if you want them to change water pump because I think it sits on the timing belt area. I told my mom who has a 95 acura interga ls to please change the timing belt now it has 100,000 miles on it and didnt get one at 60,000 miles. She did after I gave her my credit card. I begged her to take care of that car because it is nice.
Woman just dont know about cars. Anyway that is why I have the maxima because she was trashing it out. LOL But she wants it back and she cant hahaha.

Most honda/acura's timing belts need to be changed at 90,000 miles

Oh. I was just concerned because if she did blow the engine it would cost her lots more than $400 bucks to get an engine.

90k? i'm pretty sure it lists 50-60K somewhere in the owner's manual. 90 is pushing it...IMO

You're both right... the owners manual says that but almost all belt manufacturers say 60k miles. For one of the most critical parts in your engine, 60k is not at all too soon. I did a lot of looking into this with my old Accord, and ended up changing at 60k regardless of what the owners manual said (didn't even look).

Rebuilt Heads
My timing belt pulley broke at 119,000. Effectively the valves were shot. I paid about $1000 parts/labor for rebuilt cylinder heads, and I'm as good as new.

Didn't the T-Belt interval depend on the year maxima you have? ie.. early 3-gen VGs were 60k and later ones 90k?? I read that somewhere.

Yeah my nissan mechanic said the same thing. I believe they started putting 90k belts in the 93's or 94's.

That's weird, considering the 92-94 VG's are the same design as the 89-91 VG's. I would assume that they both would need a T-belt replacement around 60k. I don't have an owner's manual for a newer VG so I can't check to see it actually says.

yeah thats what i thought, but it was something about Nissan had better belts. Some of the belts you can get now are 90k belts, so i think they found a better way to make the belts so they last longer. Its hard to say.

I think the new 90k mile belts have rounded teeth in the belt. The old ones have the block teeth in the belt. In order to use the new belt I believe that you would need new pulleys.

Huh NO I do my a girlfriend there Babe!!!! I go to the University of Georgia where there are a lot of beautiful women and some women including my mom dont know the first thing when relating to the maintence of a car. I have to constantly remind her she needs to check the oil because that does prolong the engine. I have changed it a few times for her because she goes over way too much. You might know a lot about guys i dont really know, but I called my mom last night and she said yea I just spent another 300 dollars on the Interga for the igintion problem it was having. It took her 10 minutes to start it the other day.

What does your
Timing Belt going sound like ? I think mine may have gone today while I was driving. I heard what sounded like a thud then I couldn't accelerate any more my rpm's dropped to zero the car coasted down in speed when I pulled over to the shoulder at about 15 mph the engine cut off. I tried to restart it and it crancked but went into some sort of whinning sound..all the electrical stuff worked lights, radio, horn but it wouldn't turn over.
Any help would be aprriciated
Thank you in advance
b.t.w it's a 90 Max Se Auto if that makes a diff

My uncle's timing belt broke in his 91se but as luck would have it, all the mechanic did was install a new one and his car ran fine . I guess it depends on load and engine rpm to guage how much damage was done. He said he was right around 45mph so that is close to 1500rpm. The only way to tell how much damage was done is to either pull the heads or install a new T-belt and do a compression test. If all cylinders have more than the minium consider yourself lucky. My engine experienced valve float at an indicated 6400rpm in 3rd gear (automagic). From that I got 11 bent valves, 1 exhaust valve broke in half, 1 broken rocker arm, 1 destroyed #2 piston, 1 nonrepairable ported/polished clyinder head, 1 very unhappy person . I suggest buying another motor from a salveyard if you need one. Then just replace all the gaskets, waterpump, T-belt and all oil seals. All of this can be done for less than $700 including the engine.

And all of this is done only on $700 if doing the work yourself

Also, go on and have your water pump, camshaft oil seals, front main oil seal, timing belt tensioner, and thermostat replaced. Parts are very inexpensive and it will save a lost of $$$ on labor further down the road.
