cylinder/tube in trunk

I want to know if I can remove this thing?, whats its purpose? (I'm sure everybody knows what part I'm talking about), reason I ask is that I'm buling a sub box and would like it to fit against the rear seat not 1 inch from it

It's a sonar unit, do not remove it! Just in case you decide to go for a dip in the Atlantic

Its just dead weight used for dampening resonance in the rear structure of the car and a counterweight. Go ahead and pop that 22 pound bad boy outta there.

Just don't attempt to open it.....bad things will happen.

When you pull the nuts off, just make sure you hang onto the studs or they will fall beneath the car and leave open holes in the floor pan. It is a very tight sqeeze to get them back up into the hole from underneath the car....I ended up having to leave the ones I dropped out. If you have some rubber plugs that will fit, then let the studs fall and just pop the plugs in.

Haha to be honest both of y'all sound lit up.^ But I like to keep mine because it puts more weight towards the rear.

Does anyone know about the stock weight distribution of a 1994 GXE?

Is that the small box thingee that sits behind the rear seats on the American models?

Our New Zealand gen3 Maximas dont have it at all, but then we got fold down rear seats, so I guess if it was there it would get in the way.

I got rid of mine and added a custom-built sub box with one 12" in it years ago (it weighs about the same)...It's a good swap...

None of the New Zealand models had it. Ours have that thick underseal/sound deadening stuff where it would mount, so cant see any bolt holes in the floor. I see you guys even get trim that covers the underside of the speakers which we didnt get on our Gen3's either.

Heres mine

Wonder if that can be modified to fit the US 3rd gen.... if so I'd be very interested in picking some NZ rear seats at least the top part

The fold down seat hinges are bolted to the body and are independant from the rest of the seat back which is mounted to the car in the normal manner. Most New Zealand assembled Nissans of the 80's and 90's had fold down seats (Bluebird, Maxima, Sentra/Sunny range), our 4th gen Maximas have them too.

Im sure I have seen a pic of a US 2nd Gen Maxima with fold down seats, so if you could find some in a car, im sure most of the parts would be usuable. Got pics of how it works, if your interested.

I would love to talk to a Nissan engineer who worked on these cars and see what he has to say about why they added this thing in in the North American models. Are Americans more susceptible to chassis resonance than New Zealanders?

Probably no more susceptible than the American versions. The NZ assembled versions were tweaked a bit to suit our conditions with firmer suspension and better soundproofing which may have counteracted any advantage of the thingee in the boot/trunk. They are known to be excellent handling quiet cars. They were the top line luxury offering from Nissan, whereas the Bluebird was known here as the 4 door sports car not the Maxima.

We even got 5kw (127kw) more power than the Australian Maximas (122kw), which like the US models were Japanese assembled. If fact, New Zealand was the first country in the world to assemble Maximas locally outside of Japan. This was so Nissan NZ could offer a greater number of trim levels to appeal to a wider range of buyers.

Only the GXE trims had them in the states. SE trims didn't have them. (more power, less quiet. )

Yeah, that's pretty normal. point being the SE trim doesn't have the log in the states either- only the GXE. Even on the 89-91s that had the VG int he SEs.

my parts car was an 89 SE auto, it had one. at least, I am 99% sure it was an SE; no chrome, white gauges, sawblades, black non-painted mirrors... no chrome...
if it wasn't an SE, somebody sure did alot of work to make it one.
