Radio Broke

So my radio stopped working. Before I only had AM radio, and one day it completely stopped working. I've put in my own HU in my old car (Galant) so I'm comfortable in removing the radio.

However, I just want to make sure theres no electrical problems before I go out and purchase a unit. Any way I can check that for sure?

My speakers says Bose on them.. The stock HU had tape and CD player both were not working when I got the car.

No music while driving = sucks.

Thanks

It's the original head unit? Pull that bad boy out and stick a new one in it. No reason to think you have some electrical problem. Surprised the stock unit lasted this long..

yeah its original.

How can I cover the extra space? The old unit was double the size.

It's a double din? You don't have the cupholder/drawer?

I would just get the cupholder/drawer from a junkyard or something..

i actually used one of those tape aux inputs and hooked up my iPod when i used it, that was GHETTO

hmmm, my speaker covers dont say Bose either so maybe thats why i didnt have a CD player (though i think my tape player was Bose). though you would think 89-91 GXE would have tape players and 92-94 would have CD players

maybe it was just a option, or my 92 was made in December 1991 so that might be it

The Bose system was optional, and had a cd player and tape deck. My tape deck never worked, but cds still play fine.

I don't think it's as easy as switching out the old head unit, since it's Bose. Bose systems have individual amps at each speaker, so the wiring is set up for lower signals than the typical system. You may need to re-wire the car if you swap the head unit.

I believe this harness 'turns down' the signal to the level that the Bose amps need. I haven't heard of this before, but it kind of makes sense.

dang sounds like a lot of work.. I should either

A. Get it to a shop
B. Buy this direct replacement http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-94...item255b034229

but I can't justify spending so much for an old radio that might break in a few months

Yeah, that's one reason why I haven't bothered to replace my old HU, which has a dead display. It makes it hard to find stations, but it doesn't seem worth the effort to screw with the Bose system... Unless I was going to rip everything out and start from scratch

LMAO you know.. I actually thought about that, except it uses a lot of batteries. And my cig lighter is broken too b/c I wanted a nice power source.

I bought my car from my brother (I bought it in 2003, he bought the car in I think 1998) and back when the Bose was still working, he had a shop install that type of adapter. It actually sounded good for a couple of years and he had the stock stuff with that and an Alpine HU.

After a while, 3 of the 4 Bose amps or speakers went out. When I got it, it was only working in one rear speaker correctly and one of the fronts had sound, but sounded terrible.

Each of the Bose speakers has its own amplifier and is set up for a certain signal level. If you don't have the right signal level, eventually you will have problems.

If you decide to go with an aftermarket HU, the best thing to do is just bypass the Bose entirely and put in aftermarket speakers. If you are on a budget, you can use the original wiring and bypass the amps. 6x9s will fit directly in the back and 4 inch speakers will fit in the front. You can buy or make pods to replace the Bose sets in the front for bigger speakers.

I am not sure what years, but few Maximas had a double DIN cd player. Most Bose units were the single DIN tape deck, so the little trays should be pretty easy to get.
